This was a well worth trip whilst in krakow. It's approx 2hrs long in the actual mine, but need to reserve a whole afternoon to allow for travelling there and back. It is a lot of walking down stairs to various levels in the mine but the sculptures made from salt are worth seeing. This is not a trip for someone who struggles with steps and walking. The tour guide was informative but if you don't keep up or are at the back of your group you will struggle to hear what is being said. All in all worth while trip.

Extremely interesting and moving mostly for those found of history.
Organization was fine, good driver, good guide but no time to have lunch when the tour is from 8h30 to 15h and only 2 break if 10nminutes for toilets or what ever ...no restaurant on site anyway no time it s why I give 4 instead of 5

The organisation was really very good. Our driver was very punctual and the assistance was great. Martin, of the assistance, was very kind, he gave us several recommendations on places and restaurants to try and helped us on our return to the hotel. Rarely you’ll find such helpful and kind people. Thank you.

The most efficient and pleasant way to discover Krakow. Valentino was the perfect tour guide, and provided super interesting comments to help us discover the city beyond the standard commentary. He went out of his way to drop us back off in a different neighborhood squrae so we could try some Polish flat bread !
    Thanks again !

This trip was divided into two parts:
    • The tour of the mine itself which was excellent and recommended,
    • The travel to and from Krakow.

Regarding the travel, the coach driver was superb reading the road situations really well.

We were picked up by a taxi from our hotel and taken to a coach at another hotel.
The young guide told us she was 'child minding' us until we got to the salt mine. However:
    • At the salt mine the instructions were not clear until we met our guide
    • On the way back the 'child minder' was busy on her computer and forgot to book a taxi back to our hotel so rather than wait we decided to walk.

I would definitely recommend the tour and if it were not for the bored lackadaisical approach of the guide ion the coach this would have easily been a 5 star recommendation.

Not sure I would recommend for young children as those in our group were bored.

Weather let this trip down but the tour guide more than made up for this. He was a wealth of information and was very interesting to listen to. We could not see the mountains as the mist was thick and it was raining which was a shame but the place itself was lovely.

    Everything went as planned.

Maciej is very knowledgeable about the areas and is very good natured across the tour.

If you're looking to get out of Krakow and see some different bits of this part of Poland, I'd highly recommend this tour.

We paid 400 zl (nearly $100) for 4 people, thinking it would be a nice experience like in other European countries. Remember, there is just ONE bus (two on weekends). It’s a huge inconvenience to get out at any stop & wait for two hours for this bus again. The recording of the text is of very low quality, not professional. I would say 90% of the provided information is useless. There was a stop for 50 minutes at the hotel Galaxy for the lunch break for a bus driver & an assistant. We were sitting & waiting (because it’s the only bus), enjoying four drinks which were extremely expensive in this bar (as a tourist you won’t see any interesting places to walk around there). All my family said we could spend $100 much better. That was a total waste of money.

Has anyone done both tours before?
Do you think the former is worth doing?

I have done the tour with a guide - so i guess techncially i have gone on the "General tour 3.5h" or something similar, but i am only at Auschwitz 1 for 1.5h, and then we rushed to Auschwitz 2-Birkenau for 1h. i recently went on a organized tour from Krakow bc i couldnt secure guided tour ticket at the last minute from the website. but i think my guide may a person in training (?) cos he was guiding us with an Auschwitz educator standing beside him all the time. I still couldnt figure out whether he is a new guide in training within Auschwitz, or he needs to be chaperoned bc he is a guide hired from the 'outside' (ie not someone hired by the Aushcwitz site). I am inclined to believe it is the latter, but not sure, so would appreciate anyone with better insights. So this means there could be 2 diff guides - one is a tour agency guide from the outside, and another is a Auschwitz educator guide?
Answer: for future readers - I did the 6 hour tour and it is a better pace, smaller group and you visit a few more places in the camps. Our guide was very good. Worthwhile if you have more than a passing interest in the history. We were at Auschwitz for 3 hours and birkenau for 2.25 hours. Crowds were smaller that day so we didn’t have to stop to wait for other groups. I then returned to Auschwitz around 4pm to walk through on my own and to visit some of the country specific exhibits - Hungary’s exhibit is especially good. In order to return to camp 1, I purchased free tickets ahead of time since you have to renter the queue.

Tour vs self guided - 100% go on a tour. The guides paint a more complete picture than you will get from a guidebook. You can arrive early if you want to see birkenau before it gets crowded and walk on your own. No ticket is required to visit birkenau.

Auschwitz vs birkenau - you want to see both. Auschwitz is more intact and has almost all of the exhibits. The exhibits of luggage, eyeglasses, shoes, and human hair is overwhelming. Birkenau is 25x the size of Auschwitz camp 1. Many buildings were destroyed but you can get a better feel for the scale of the genocide. Even with most buildings destroyed you get a chill realizing how people were sorted and put to death. Many times within hours of arrival.

Krakow ghetto - to round out your experience walk through the ghetto and Jewish quarter. Visit the synagogues. Realize the size of the Jewish community that thrived in this area and then 90% of them were killed.

Last - learn about the history that led up to the holocaust. Hitler did not rise up in a vacuum. There were 20 years of anti-semitism that occurred before the death camps. The nazis were very good at isolating Jews, cutting them off from day to day community and business involvement and then eventually shipped them off to forced labor and death. Awareness of that history will help prevent this from ever happening again.
