- Dave TYork, UK6 contributionsLet's be clear. This tour is of the museum in the Office Block of Oskar Schindler's Factory. The enamel factory itself no longer exists, but there is an interesting Contemporary Art Gallery on the site of it which is next door to this location.
The museum has a focus on the experience of Krakow and its residents during the run-up and throughout WWII. It is less about Oskar Schindler himself but you do get to see his office. There's nothing original remaining, but it is well-appointed with similar items and 'repro'.
The residents of Krakow suffered badly during the Nazi occupation, and clearly the Jews suffered the most, but the museum makes it clear that partisans and those believed to be partisan were also tortured and executed. it's a valuable education.
One criticism is that this museum is a bit of a victim of its own success. It was frankly too busy, too crowded to stop and consider things properly. We were provided with a guide and headset to hear her commentary in English, but we were whicked through rather speedily due to the amount of visitors. Please take this into consideration. I was pleasantly surprised how enjoyable it was, and even more surprised at how beautiful the scenery was. Poland really is beautiful! You visit three castles and spend some time in a national forest. I certainly recommend this tour, but here are the things you should know before you go:
There is a good amount of walking so wear comfortable shoes. If you have trouble getting around, being on your feet for long periods of time, or navigating stairs this might not be the tour for you.
It will take you most of the day. The tour operates at your pace, but to appreciate everything you should take your time and soak everything in. You do stop at a nice, reasonably priced, Polish restaurant for lunch, but that cost is not included in the tour. If you're looking to save time or money, I assume you could pack a lunch and skip this part if you'd like. Our guide was extremely flexible with things like that. He will also stop at restrooms and shops to purchase things like coffee or snacks along the way if need be.
Lastly, the tour guide does not go into the castles with you. He will drive you to all the places and obtain any necessary passes for you, but he will wait for you back at the car while you tour the castle/sites. Personally, my wife and I really appreciated this aspect of the tour. It allowed us to go at our own pace, take extra time to look at the things we found interesting, and just kind of breeze past the things we weren't as interested in.
As I said earlier, I was definitely surprised at how much I enjoyed this trip and would recommend this tour highly. - GB112 contributionsTo get the most out of this tour you really need a guide speaking in your chosen language. It will help you understand the story behind the events of that dreadful time for the people of Krakow. Book a tour beforehand to avoid the queues. The one we had allowed cancellation 24 hours before. The tour we had was two hours, it’s quite tiring as there is no seating to take a rest. It was also very busy with lots of visitors who were not on guided tours and had little choice but to walk through your group interrupting the speaker. However, It’s well worth a visit particularly if you do the concentration camp tours as well. The stories are linked. Bags/backpacks are not permitted inside but there are free lockers to leave them in plus a cloakroom. If you need to go to the loo then go before your tour starts. There are facilities available for both men and women but there was a huge queue for the ladies. It was hot inside so plenty of visitors wearing shorts.
