- abetuPrague, Czech Republic54 contributionsYou have to visit this place when you have the chance. It’s lovely experience, you can walk through the whole house by yourself just with an audio guide. We paid a little extra money and enjoyed being actually photographed in the historic atelier and in the costumes. Definitely recommend that too. Big thank you to the people there, especially the young guy at the counter. He was really sweet and professional!Written July 9, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ghanbgNuremberg, Germany659 contributionsMore a shop than officially a museum but the selection of old furniture and equipment from shops around 100-150 years ago was really quite interesting. Learned that in the old days you bought your kerosene for your lamps at the grocers…. Not something we had been aware of up to now.Written May 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- germanwithoutsandalsgermany92 contributionsThis theatre is a true survivor. There is only one other theatre from this era of European history this well preserved. Two lucky circumstances had to concur for this to happen: first, that the theatre didn't burn down while it was in regular use. It was indeed designed to be sacrificed if it burned: this is why it was on the other end of the Cloak bridge, so that it could burn down without setting the Castle on fire with it. Theatres were built mostly of wood and all lit with candles, and most theatres from the baroque paid the price at least once in their history.
The second circumstance though, is even rarer: the owners of the castle had to lose interest around the early 1800s, failing thus to modernise the theatre to the standards of the later inventions. There are other theatres from the 18th century where the building has survived: but as the walls endured, all the stage technology was updated.
In Cesky Krumlov, it didn't happen. The old sceneries from the 18th have survived, as have the hard benches for the audience, many costumes, and all the technology to change sceneries, light everything with candles, make sound effects, etc. This theatre remains to tell historians and opera fans how the oldest known pieces of music theatre were performed back in the day.
The guided tour of the theatre, of which we attended the German version in a very small group, takes about one hour and includes the vision of a small video, and a visit to the area below the stage where the magic happend, thanks to the work of 30 people operating in well-rehearsed unison.
If you indulge in some Mozart once in a while, sitting in much more modern theatres, and wonder how it would have been back in the day to see such a show, it is an absolutely fascinating experience. Although subject to some important restoration, the place preserves its patina, which makes it even more endearing. We are already planning to come back when more of the collection will be on display, and will watch the official website for announcements.Written June 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
