- CharlieD1966St. Petersburg, FL88 contributionsCuenca is one of those towns you must visit. Beautiful during the day, and better at night. Stayed in the monastery where parking the car was deep into the caves under the monastery, just the start of real feel living.
The old town built on a ravine with houses hanging over edges and living styles nearly unimaginable, and great... Just slightly touristy but not real bad.
As I said, gorgeous at night....Written July 6, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There is a very good audio guide which sticks to the basics and is read by a Spanish woman (rather than the boring drone of the Englishman reciting a thesis length description used in so many other Spanish cathedrals).
There is an entry fee which can be reduced if you buy a combined ticket for three other church sites.Written September 28, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We can say that “Cuenca” is an unusually and very welll-preserved medieval fortified city. Conquered by the Castilians in the 12th century, it became a royal town and bishopric endowed with important buildings, such as Spain's first Gothic cathedral, and the famous casas colgadas (hanging houses), suspended from sheer cliffs overlooking the Huécar river. An not only those, you will find on your walk throughout the historic center allot more old buildings, there is indeed allot to see and to take pictures of it.Written June 9, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - John FNewark-on-Trent, UK646 contributionsYou must visit this museum. First, it occupies 2/3rds of the Casas Colgades. And second it’s exhibits of contemporary abracadabra art mainly by local artists is fantastic. Take time to view the audio/visual exhibit that gives much insight into the significance of the museum to the art scene here. Free entry. Allow at least an hour.Written September 28, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal21,894 contributionsIt can be not easy to believe, but it is real the “Science Museum of Castilla-La Mancha” is located in the medieval city of Cuenca. The museum opened its doors in the year 1999. The new and old contents of the museum collaborate in the understanding of a general objective or “strong idea”. The museum is a “Must visit” place when walking in the old tow. It is an experience you will not forget that soon.
The tour proposed by the museum is a journey to planet Earth, to its past and to its future, below its surface, to its interior: earth and fire, and on earth, air and water; and outer space, all filled with emptiness and energy, and matter, and forces, and all of LIFE.Written June 13, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. But there are many other building remarkably built on the edge of the cliff. The three houses are now a restaurant and the excellent Museo de Arte Abstracto Espanol (free entry). If you are staying at the Parador you can’t miss these houses as you walk into the old townWritten September 28, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Matt LSan Francisco, CA3 contributionsAn amazing collection. Rates among the great small museums of modern and contemporary art in the world in a building that is equally stunning.Written November 21, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - kingfuGreater London, UK80 contributionsThe staff were great. Polite and very helpful. Entrance was free when I went so I have scored accordingly, although I believe that entrance to the gardens around the modern building is always free. It is well laid out and although not huge, has plenty to offer the young and anybody with an interest in dinosaurs. My only complaint would be that I arrived on foot in the mid day heat. It is up a steep hill and there is absolutely no signage to tell you how to get there. It was a long, frustrating and hot journey to find our way in. More signs please,!Written June 15, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- GuyStrohmengerOedt, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany7 contributionsA wonderfull walking experience at the Callejones de las Majadas. Very spectacular rock formations that you walk through. Roughly 2 kms long, relatively narrow through the rock formations and easy to navigate with a well posted directional route, Extra-ordinary rock formations. Easy to find, roughly 2 kms outside Las Majadas & signposted. I have also visited the famous ' Cuidad entcantada' which is about 10 kms away but was more impressed with this experience.Written August 12, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alex FThe Villages, FL1,312 contributionsBusy area. It serves as a bus and taxi stop, restaurants seatings and regular traffic goes in the middle of it. Let’s add the Cathedral and what appears to be the town hall.Written October 19, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Phi SomchaiBangkok, Thailand3,692 contributionsThis is a lookout point and you will have a great view of the Walled city of Cuneca. It was very windy and cooling here due to the altitude and openness of the place.Written February 23, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Eivissa L10 contributionsThen old ltown is simply beautiful. The hanging houses are amazing. The hotel San Martin restaurant is outstanding and should be tried. - Alex FThe Villages, FL1,312 contributionsCuplé of hours and you walk the entire site. The cost to enter is very low. Trails are in need of some trimming, some informative stations are in need of replacement. And some trails are not properly marked. There is no way to get lost. Small children may be at risk because of the steep cliffs with no protection.Written October 21, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - KoukatMelbourne, Australia755 contributionsImportant note: these tours are run in Castellano only! There is absolutely no english spoken. My level of Spanish is intermediate B2/C1 and I could understand most of what was said.
You need to buy the tickets earlier in the day (you can only purchase for the same day). They then ask you to come back around 15 minutes before the tour to check that the minimum number of tickets has been sold and that the tour will go ahead (you will get a refund if it doesn't).
The tour starts at a doorway on Calle Alfonso VIII (there is no seat there, no toilets and it is hot in the sun so don't arrive too early).
As the tour starts you are invited inside by a tour guide, given a hard hat and then told a bit of a history of the cave you are in and how it become a tunnel during the Civil war. As the tour progresses you stop at various points along the tunnel to get more information on how it was built and how it was used. At each of these stops there is an information board (Castellano language only).
We went on the dramatised tour at 6pm last Monday which involved an actor playing a local during the civil war. He gave a good feel of what it would have been like living in Cuenca during that period. It was moving.
After the actor had finished his piece we then went back to the tour guide who continued our movement along the tunnel and told us more about Cuenca's notable architectural features. You really could feel how much the guide loves Cuenca and its fascinating history.
I could follow most of what was going on but the 2 others in my group (one has very basic spanish, the other an ok amount of italian) struggled and I translated for them.
The total time of the tour is around 50 minutes and you are on your feet the whole time but you don't walk far. There are no real steps.
Overall, it was a good experience and I am glad I went. Its a shame that the tunnel is not more freely open so that people can read the information boards on their own, rather than have to rely on attending a guided tour as it would be great if more people could experience the tour and receive the information it provides.Written September 15, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Stupendous views back to the castle/parador, pleasant ramble through open countryside and some pine forest . About 7.5km in length, takes about 3 hours or so, with plenty of stops for photos and rest. Middle section rather dull and exposed to full sun - so take a hat and plenty of water. Walk route is available on MapMyWalk app.Written April 24, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
