    What an amazing find. This is the most outstanding wooded garden. We took a picnic and sat and listened to silence. Not sure if I want to rave too much about this place, it needs to be kept a secret. If you go, please respect this tranquil forest.

    Second visit with friends to spend a few days by the gorgeous pool. You will definitely want to return if you are lucky enough to stay here!

    This is a splendid little Romanesque church whose exterior is always fascinating (just trying to imagine its many prior manifestations is worth one's time and effort) and whose interior, though hard to predict when it is open, is equally interesting. There are modest but helpful placards giving the background on this ancient edifice; a crypt (I believe) that one can visit (it was too crowded with other visitors when I last had a chance to visit it while it was open in the middle of the truffle festival last fall). I especially like some of the carved decorations on the facade and don't miss walking around the side, itself interesting and offering a nice view of the valley. I would add this church to a short list of great Romanesque church buildings you can visit within a few miles of each other in Trequanda, Castelmuzio, and Corsignano (Pienza). [I have visited many times, but the only interior access I have had was during the Truffle Festival.]

    We stayed nearby and would have missed this were it not for Tripadvisor. It's very accessible from the main road between San Giovanni and Torreneiri but look out for the sign and pull over in the layby on the opposite side of the road.

    The archaeologists who run the smattraction were there when we visited and one took the opportunity to show us around which was most helpful. All signs and information is in Italian and English so we would have been done without this anyway.

    I would say you would spend no more than an hour here but it does beautifully set the scene of the area in terms of its Etruscan, Roman and Medieval history.

    Paid to get in and a couple exhibits weren't working. The smelling exhibit worked which was oK. The whole place looked a little tired.

    First off, we did not stay here overnight but rather did a "wine tasting". I could not find them as an attraction, so I put the review here. But all you need to know from this review is this:

    My wife and I came here in 2010 for wine and enjoyed the experience so much, that we chose to visit them again over all the other wineries in Italy when we returned in May 2013.

    So as for the details if you want them;
    This time around was with my in laws and my 2 daughters (both under 2). Also this time, I arranged the "wine tasting" on my own through email communication with Donella.

    http://www.canonicaholiday.com/

    Although her english is limited, it is more than enough to communicate. She and her family are great hosts and exude hospitality. So I can only imagine that staying at the agriturismo would be fantastic. They accommodated me and my family as if we were their family. As for why I keep putting "wine tasting" in quotations is because all I expected was some of their fantastic wine under a shaded terrace with some of the best views you'll get in Tuscany. And that alone would have been more than adequate. However, they treated us to a feast of prosciutto, cheese, frittata, spinach/potato tart, fresh bread and bruschetta with olive oil that is also from their farm. Not to mention dessert, espresso, and an aperitif. Did I mention that they are inexpensive also?!?!?! For one bottle of the famed brunello of the same area, we were able to get 5 bottles of their Terre Asso which I feel is just as good if not better! So, if you will be in Crete Senesi area just north of Montalcino, you should definitely visit this winery (they also make honey!) I can't speak more highly of them. It was a big highlight of our trip, and I can't wait to return. Please message me if you have any other questions.

    According to Don Andrea, the local parish priest, Madonna della Neve is closed because it needs substantial renovation (including a new roof) and is not deemed safe as a consequence. The site, however, on a knoll just outside of the ancient town, is lovely, offering views of the valley and Monte Amiata on one side and of the field where the annual Giostra di Simone is held each year on the Sunday nearest August 5, the feast day of the eponymous MdN. A outdoor mass is celebrated on the small plaza of the church before the joust and the horses and their riders are blessed from the parapet on the morning of the competition. The structure is an attractive, simple building invoking the pretty standard architectural vocabulary of chapels in the Siena province. Montisi has just completed a total restoration of its main house of worship and made substantial restoration of the small chapel ("La Cura") where services were held during the restoration. It is doubtful, but one can hope (and pray) that funds will be forthcoming for another renovation.
