The main great church at the town at barock style. Is big and with a nice yard. The paintings are so amazing and the feeling of the church emit tranquility and peace. The bell tower is unique!
The highlight is the crypt, containing the supposed tomb of St Matthew, with the ceiling completely covered with stunning frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Jesus - they just take your breath away.

Considered to be the most beautiful Baroque church in town, with some really nice Baroque paintings and decorations filling the interior nave and side chapels.
It really is 'a jewel of Baroque Art' as the leaflet states.

My second visit was on a Saturday morning and the wonderful guy on duty gave me directions to the marvellous Santa Maria de Lama church with the crypt and frescoes.
There was a volunteer guide, and she gave me an insider's view of the architecture and explained the history.

I took the bus nbr 19 from the centre of Salerno (stop near the tourist info office) then a short walk up to the castle and the amazing views of Salerno and the coast.
This medieval castle was once a Byzantine fort, built by Arechi, duke of Benevento around the 8th century AD.

If possible try to schedule a tour of the interesting marble interior but especially down in the crypt where the original church was and the collection of manuscripts renown throughout Europe.
