Great day out from San Pedro but be advised, as the name suggests, that it's at altitude (4300m; 14,000ft)... so acclimatise for a day or two in the desert before heading up.
Be mindful about the altitude, lakes take you to 4100m so just try to acclimate yourself first.

+ easy to reach from San Pedro + 2/3day tour (I used ‘Nortrek’ which was great) + Only a couple of hundred metres to climb in altitude to gain amazing views over the area including Vulcanos, Lakes, Alma Radioteles...
According to google maps it was a simple 36km drive from San Pedro De Atacama on the route 27 followed by an 11km drive on a dirt road to get to the spot where you start the climb, near a set of observatories.

The Andes rising up off of the Atacama to east were the perfect backdrop to the lagoon and magically came alive in color as the sun set, bathing them in the evening twilight.

There is also a National Park info centre, where you can have better info about the geological ages, rocks formation, wildlife, and initiatives to conserve the area.

If you're lucky local dogs will follow you as well they know the area and are real friendly!! Awesome place and very cheap if you do it by bike!

This lagoon has the lake you can swim in but the water is super cold other than that it has a beautiful landscape and it is an experience out of this world.
It is recommended to go here in the morning if driving yourself as after 1pm the tourist buses generally come in for afternoon and evening tours and the lake gets swamped with people.

There is a designated view point when returning from Lagunas Miscanti and Lagunas Miniques, from where one can get flabbergasting views of the lagoon, the red rocks and the Andean mountain range.
We saw some different birds as well as flamingos here, although they were a good way off compared to some other locations.
