What travelers are saying
- RupertBear_12Eastbourne, England, United Kingdom54 contributionsThe castle is just ruins and there is not much to see. The caves are more like mines and there are drawings throughout. The history of the caves is interesting. You have to go with a guide so check the website for times. I would combine both. From the castle you get a great view over the area. This is a very touristy place and this is reflected in the prices in the cafes, so beware and check beforehand. We stopped during a cycling trip for a few hours. I would not revisit. We had a museumcard - so this was covered, otherwise I probably would have been disappointed.Written May 1, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Maarten VT12 contributionsVery nice cave with lots of educational activities. Very cool is the possibility to carve your own mergelstone. Nice bar for afterwards.Written March 6, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- GuppeCHulshout, Belgium641 contributionsGreat experience visiting 'de Gemeentegrot'. You can choose to do the visit on foot or by some sort of train. My son wanted to walk and it turned out only 3 other people went for the same option. So we almost had a private guided tour, and honestly the guide did a great job telling about the different roles, the history, and much more. Even dinosaurs were included - very much appreciated by my son.
Simply said, great experience and worth visiting again in the future.Written November 17, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Des HHull258 contributionsThese catacombs are almost identical copies of many of those under the city of Rome and they are built into some old quarry and mine workings. Indeed, so accurate are these copies that when a Roman catacomb was damaged, the copy at Valkenburg was studied to see how the original should be restored. We were a mixed group of Dutch and English speakers and one of our party was recovering from a knee operation. Our very knowledgeable guide was an excellent English speaker and he devised a route that included a large number of the catacombs that could be accessed on a ‘step free’ basis. That did mean the we missed out on a few of the examples. That did not matter as the content that we did see and the explanation that went with them was fascinating enough. An excellent visit. The only downside to this museum is that parking has to be found on street a little walk away from the site.Written July 22, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PaulKlaverBarcelona, Spain66 contributionsgreat local casino run by the state casino organisation directly belonging to the Ministerie of Justice. I consider this a mid-size casino. All tables and most games are present. Would be nice if there was slightly more people on some tables. On other tables the play is a bit slow.Written August 24, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- 879martinpPretoria, South Africa88 contributionsWe visited Valkenburg for a day. The main aim of the visit was to visit the Gemeentegrot. You can either do a walking tour or a ride on a" train" tour. We chose the train. Be sure to take extra clothing,ie:jacket or jersey as the temperature inside the cave is 12 degrees Celsius. It becomes quite cold in there. A very interesting cave with lots of art drawings and carvings in the lime stone walls. There is also a very interesting story regarding the cave and the 2nd world war. Will i visit again - yes, next time i will do a walking tour in order to have more time to look at the art.Written May 19, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MijnlieverdFHTagum City, Philippines4,206 contributionsThere was no concert or show in that time but we were able to try looking into the area. A very nice amphitheater and the fantastic design of the stage trees around and breezy place. A very nice concert venue usually for a summer event.Written October 9, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dave CAlexandria, VA1,578 contributionsA small but comprehensive collection of local archeology, culture, mining, fossil, and some interesting contemporary art exhibits. Make sure you go up the stairs to the second and third floors. Very little is in English but many exhibits are self explanatory. The building itself is a very old place, with narrow stairs and no air conditioning but fine on both for reasonable mobility; a elevator is also present. Admission was 8 euros per person.Written July 31, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Eor OAuckland, New Zealand255 contributionsThe ruins of this castle which towers over the historic town of Valkenburg is well worth a visit. There are explanations marked along he way to identify each room and the history of the castle is explained in detail with maquettes of what it looked like in different centuries. The outlook from the ruine over the town is impressive and there is a nice restaurant/ cafe near the top to relax in and cool down with a drink.Written September 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - damartinovicThe Hague, The Netherlands116 contributionsTheme park for very young kids. For kids it will be fun to be in 70's / 80's attractions. The park is unfortunately very low maintained and some attractions in repair. Few food shops are closed. I wonder how they still can keep the park open. Hope they can survive the coming year as visitors are not that high.Written August 8, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
