- Ludwik D267 contributionsThis is the way small arcades should be built, small tight corridors opening up to reveal a wider area, perfectly in character to a small market town.Written January 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Richard JLondon, UK1,609 contributionsThe positioning of the memorial dominating the high street soaring heavenwards reminds you of the emotions and deep feelings it must have aroused when erected. No one in the town would have been unaffected by the trauma of the Great War and hopefully like the Cenotaph in London this was a real and daily connection with those who did not return.Written June 23, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - IAN DWigan, UK19,248 contributionsWe called in on way back to Gisburn having read about the quality of the meat on Google. You ring a bell and the farmers wife unlocks a door and takes you in a large fridge. We bought sirloin and rib eye steak and a homemade steak and ale pie. Prices are good. You can see the beef cattle in the adjoining fieldsWritten July 8, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Geoff HSissinghurst, UK12,194 contributionsBuilt by the owner of Skipton Castle to carry limestone mined from quarries on his estate, the Earl of Thanet's Springs Canal is a private canal running from Skipton Castle to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It was opened in 1774 and takes its name from the springs at the base of the escarpment on which Skipton Castle stands. A very intersting walk is to start at Mill Bridge, just below Skipton Castle, and follow the towpath alongside Eller Beck, pass underneath New Bridge to the junction with the Leeds and Liverpool canal and then return along Canal Street past the Royal Shepherd (once separate properties called Watson's Houses and, in 1851, having over 100 occupants) to Mill Bridge. Boards alongside the canal give full information on where you are and what you can see around you.Written September 30, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Geoff HSissinghurst, UK12,194 contributionsIf you are anywhere near Holy Trinity Church in Skipton, it is worth popping in to have a look at the white chest tomb of George Clifford, the Third Earl of Cumberland. Richly decorated with heraldic shields, it is well worth seeking out. Goerge Clifford was an accomplished sailor (fighting the Spanish Armada and winning battles in the Caribbean) and also good at "jousting". He became the "second champion" of Queen Elizabeth I and was made a Knight of the Garter. Although he was born at Brougham Castle in Westmorland, he spent most of his adult life at court; neglecting his northern estates and abandoning Brougham Castle. Following his death, on 30 October 1605, he was embalmed and buried in the family vault under the Altar in the church. Across the sanctuary from his tomb is the more sombre tomb of his grandfather, Henry, the First Earl of Cumberland. There is, also, a small third tomb. This white tomb is the tomb of Francis, George Clifford's first son who died before he was five years old.Written October 2, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
