Quite a good visit, lots of stairs to climb, but the guide was very knowledgeable. I don't usually take guided tours, but it was included in the trip. Most of the furniture was replica or 'similar' to the original.

Harz Mountains offer very good hiking and beautiful scenery. In parts the trees are temporarily affected by the bark beetle infestation. This process has been on/off going on for many years.
I was always fascinated by the rich history of Harz Mountains and their connection with Goethe.
We enjoyed several hiking trails with our German friends who spend many vacations in this beautiful area.
Our base to visit the Harz Mountains was Sankt Andreasberg.

Its not the biggest museum, but I really like the display of cockpits, starting with a fighter from 1914, and ending with a F16. Including Spitfire, Mustang, FW190, ME109, Tornado etc. They have a nice collection of planes, and some of them are not the ones you usually see in museums. I recommend this museum.

The Brocken railroad belongs to the Harz-Vacation. And you should definitely drive from Wernigerode, because there you can see the extraordinary passages through the city, through the public road traffic, before you enter the scenic nature park.
Great: the loudspeaker announcements explain what you can see where along the route. Really great explanations, unfortunately only in German.
We rode a historic steam train, was not the nostalgic train, but neither was the diesel locomotive. I did not find out how to check with which vehicle you are driving.
The prices seem outrageous, but you get a very long trip up the Brocken for it, with a technically demanding railroad that also needs maintenance. Therefore acceptable. As it is inevitably getting narrow on the way back from the Brocken, we recommend: short hike to Schierke (1h) or Drei Anne Hohne (1h50m). There you can stop for a tasty snack and take the bus back to the starting point.

Well I have to say first of all I love anything miniature. So you can imagine I was in hog heaven here. But the job, the detail they gave to important monuments over Germany was outstanding! The park is very clean and surprisingly laid out with more exhibits than I had originally thought. After the miniature park I went to the citizen park, but I didn’t spend as much time there.
If you drive, there is a parking lot at the location. If not the nice woman providing tickets will call a taxi for you.

Good Tourist Office, where you can get not only brochures for your city but also the whole area. Good service and nice facilities in the town hall house. Here you can also buy postcards and stamps.

This small, beautiful animal park is really worth a visit. Especially if you have kids. Our kids had so much fun, and so did we. You can just sit for ever and pat the goats or look at the tiny rabbits, or you can play at the nice playground or you can simply take the walk around and see the beautiful animals :-)

Beautiful area view and climb! There are many different rutes towards the top - so choose an easier or more difficult path depending on your level of physique.

The train is outragegously expensive (47€ pr person for 20min trip up or down Brocken)- so skip it and take a beautiful hike instead. You’ll experience Brocken in a whole new way.

You should know that there is no way to refill your waterbottle at the top - thought you can pay 4,5 € for 0,5L of water, which is crazy. So bring enough with you on the trip.

The best of this is the train journey. The view is spectacular but there is nothing else to do. Just get back on the train. If you enjoy walking then this is a good hike, and the views may be worth it, then a train back perhaps.

My firefighter husband loved this, and so did I. The museum is filled with interesting pictures, rigs, and all sorts of memorabilia from centuries of firefighting in the area. The staff was friendly and helpful. There are no English explanations, but most of it is self-explanatory. We took lots of pictures.
