- 40luluPortsmouth, UK516 contributionsWe visited here and it is a whole day activity, the information is set out really well, with videos from survivors, it is good for all ages to learn, the grounds are a sombre memory from this awful place, it is really interesting and informative, there are toilets, cafe and a bookshop, parking is available.Written August 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal24,385 contributionsThe “Celle Castle” or, “Celle Palace”, is located in the German town of Celle, just in front of the “Bomann Museum”, you just need to cross the street, which is in “Lower Saxony”, was one of the residences of the “House of Brunswick-Lüneburg”. This quadrangular building is the largest castle in the southern Lüneburg Heath region. We arrived a bit late, and as we could see that there where building works ongoing, we did not turned back the other day for a visit, so we just visited the park and took some pictures from the outside. Perhaps another time we will have a better chance to visit the castle.Written March 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal24,385 contributionsThe Bomann Museum is above all a beautiful museum where you can see how people from the region lived at that time, beyond all expectations a very fascinating museum, not large-scale but certainly worth it, you have to look out for an opportunity to park your car. This because it is located right in the center of the city, directly opposite Celle Castle, the Bomann Museum, is one of the largest and most important museums in Lower Saxony. The house, got founded in the year 1892 as the “Patriotic Museum”, was named in the year 1923 after its first director, Wilhelm Bomann. The Museum am Schlossplatz presents extensive collections on Lower Saxony folklore and cultural history as well as Celle's regional and city history.Written March 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mikem0Greater London, UK73 contributionsCelle is possibly a great example of what a lot of Germany would have been like without WWII. The church is probably the pinnacle of this rich and detailed style and that in a protestant one.Written September 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal24,385 contributionsThe “Stechbahn”, formerly called “Steckelbahn”, is the city's former tournament venue, going from the “Castle until the Oldest Datest Haus”. Among all the old houses you also will also find the “Löwen Pharmacy”, who got built around the year 1530 and was the “princely court pharmacy” until the year 1849. The museum café has been located in this historic building since October from the year 2011. The main room is furnished with original shelves and historic apothecary vessels. In the year 2004/2005 the “Stechbahn” was redesigned, also to adapt the St. Marien City Church to the city center traffic concept and to make it more attractive as a place for the citizens and visitors of the city of Celle. Very nice and most off all interesting walking area for everybody.Written March 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal24,385 contributionsWhen you come out of the “Bomann Museum”, you turn left and on the corner once again left, and continue walking in the direction of the church, and so you will find the “Old Town Hall” also on your left hand side, the town hall who is a listed building in the city of Celle in Lower Saxony and who was the seat of the city administration until the year 1999. The northern part of the town hall dates from the time the city was founded in 1292. The north gable in the Weser Renaissance style was built in 1579. Around 1580 three town houses were demolished and the town hall was expanded. Very nice building to take some pictures from it.Written March 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Keith P18 contributionsI was stationed in Celle as a soldier back in the 70's and 80's and we use to use the path through this park as a short cut into town. Ive been back just once since those days, (2008). Its beautiful, peaceful and so worth a visit.Written September 22, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal24,385 contributionsThe year of the construction of the current building was in the year 1526.
The oldest, dated half-timbered house in Celle's old town is located at Heiligen Kreuz 26.
This is when you enter in the street who is in front of the castle, first you will have the “Old Town hall" on your left, then comes the church also on your left and finally at the end of the street you will see the house. It was built as a gable-independent gable roof half-timbered building with a cantilevered stepped gable with Gothic ornamentation. After various fires, only a few half-timbered houses in this street are remaining of the original medieval buildings, and this is one of them. The rest of today's half-timbered buildings date from the 16th – 19th centuries. A beautifully preserved half-timbered house. But the exciting thing is the successful, modern interior design. Since it is a shop, it can also be visited.Written March 17, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The most interesting part is devoted to queen Caroline of Denmark, who had a tragic love affair and spent het last days here thanks to her brother, the British king (see the film A Royal Affair of 2012). If you take a guided tour (9 euro incl. access to the museum) you will also see the theatre, the kitchen and the wonderful chapel, painted by Maarten de Vos of Antwerp in the Renaissance. You can only see it behind glass but this does not lessen the view, all details are clearly visible. A short 3d film with explanation is available without the guided tour, but you really should experience the space itself. ,Written September 13, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
