What a welcoming place for a beginner. Bob was a wonderful help and gave us his time and patience. What an asset. I look forward to visiting again.

Small carpark that is directly opposite the wall. Over the road you can enter by a gate instead of trying to cross the cattle grid, which many do! The wall is a good stretch and the turret is easy to picture. the crossing of the river is a little more difficult to visualise. The River Irthing flows close by the wall.
In summary, peaceful stroll with lots to take in. Mind the faster walkers, this is a popular stretch.

A fine example of a milecastle. Information boards explain the orientation. There is a great sense of the Roman at this site, which is next to a stream (with railway bridge) and very easy to interpret sections of vallum. The walk is undulating with steps and a foot bridge across the burn.

To reach the Fort from the car park is a steep climb especially for one semi incapacitated such as I. However, slow and steady I managed and found the effort very well worth while. Blessed with the weather had a delightful time exploring the Fort, added to by the sheep with their lambs

Visit for the brilliant Burne-Jones stained glass windows and especially the 15 light great East Window.

Note especially the Pelican in the bottom row. This is unique to Brampton, whereas many other of the cartoon have been re-used in other churches by Morris and co who turned the designs into these glass windows.

If possible see the windows with either the church lighting or even better the glorious sunshine from outside pouring through into the nave..

Large car park although not all the people are visiting the priory. Excellent little EH shop and welcome. The story of the priory and then subsequent use, including the continual use of the church, is fascinating. Good educational boards in the grounds explaining the groundworks / ruins.
It is worth reading about the Ducre's and the Howards as the whole area of Northumberland and Cumbria is affected by these families.
Our Wall walker's diverted to look at the priory and use the coffee shop. They said it was well worth taking the time off the trek.

Whilst on holiday, we popped in on Saturday afternoon (2pm 10.07.21) asking for information re where to go when our grandchild arrives in the middle of the week. We were greeted by the most lovely and helpful man who talked us through a couple of options re grandchild and then talked us through walking options on Hadrian's wall.

If all of the staff are half as good as this man, it must be one of the best visitor centres in the UK.

Brilliant customer experience. 10/10 Brampton 👍

Very welcoming and fabulous location with 2 lovely rooms in a separate building overlooking countryside.
Completely away from it all - except with the added bonus of an on-site brewery making fabulous beers and a bar serving the local community

This was my first visit to a RSPB reserve. The peace and tranquility was very restful. I could hear a few bird calls but at first could not see any birds at all. Then as I stood still and relaxed and slowly gazed about, I gradually saw more and more birds on each side of the track. My first sighting was a canada goose, I think. Yes, I'm a novice bird spotter. I went to the hide adjacent to the tarn where some photos were on display. Very helpful. I did the Stagsyke trail which was a good introductory route. I will be back to try other routes.

Wonderful walk along the river to the viaduct and back. See the source of stone for Hadrian's Wall. Well-maintained.

Some important history contained in this church, which was once part of the priory. It is now the parish church having been adopted after the reformation by a local wealthy family and the village. The churchyard has a few interesting grave stones which give some insight into the people from local villages and in some cases further afield.
The church is quite dark and much of it is Victorian. Some of the architecture is impressive though.

I love a good craft shop and have found very few that don't rely on mass produced pieces or high end overpriced stuff, but the Abstract Gallery is one such place. Had the pleasure of speaking to the owners for a while and they are clearly very experienced art dealers themselves, who know a lot about the local artists they are representing. The place is full of different craftmanship at largely affordable rates, ranging from a few pounds to a few grand. They have paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramic, glass, industrial art, glass, jewellery, textile and lots of other stuff. The place is a pleasure to visit and take a wonder and the managers not pushy at all. Its sitting above a cafe where you can get some excellent coffee and cake too.

My first glimpse of Hadrian's Wall, shameful when I'm such a history geek. A lovely area, well looked after and maintained.
The carpark is paid for by texting a number, nice and easy, with the money going towards the upkeep of the site.
A couple of plaques explaining how the tower would have looked, are vey informative. It shocked the old folks I was with that the original wall was an earth embankment with towers.
With a short 2-3 minute walk to Pike Hill Signal tower its easy to include both sites in a single visit.

Once again the food at Braid Restaurant Brampton Golf Club was outstanding. Sunday Roast Beef dinner followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding and ice cream. It’s a hard choice to avoid the choice of something else with chips but the roast beef was excellent, plenty of vegetables, gravy and homemade yorkshires simply delicious
