One thing I would say is the gardens are on a smaller scale if you are more for the gardens at sites however I personally loved the house even more than many bigger and well known!
Although you aren't allowed to take photos inside the property as family still live on site you can take plenty of photos outside.
Stover Canal

Really incredible views on a lovely walk - just be careful of cyclists - a little demanding and rude in their request to have full quick access to the majority of the path
At Teigngrace Lock the keepers cottage is a private residence but views of the old lock can be enjoyed.

The Abbey's little cafe serves lovely cake and has beautiful views over the green and bay beyond, and is a wonderful spot to enjoy refreshment afterwards.
The interactive displays on the monastic history, development, and use of the site during the Napoleonic wars are informative and appealingly presented.

... in a peaceful location was an ideal afternoon out, the remains of the castle are very impressive, lovely stonework, nice views and lots of starlings nesting in the roof in the gate house which was nice to see.
There's a lovely cafe on site, so a well earned cup of coffee and slice of cake restored flagging feet and I returned to the English Heritage shop for a guide book to read at leisure and a further chat with the cu...

The loved holding the Guinea Pigs which was their favourite thing, and having the picnic area right next to the Steam Railway made it an extra treat because it gave us an amazing view of the trains.

lovely station, with stunning views, nice little cafe on site so you can have a nice coffee or sandwhich whilst waiting for your train, nice views of Torquay, and the sea.

Compton Castle Paignton 5.6 mi away
#2 of 7 Sights & Landmarks in Paignton
A really lovely visit albeit a little quick but having seen the castle I'd doubt if a more sedate visit would have lasted much longer as it's quite a small site.
There are not many rooms to view, and the entrance fee reflects the renovation and ongoing works to upkeep such a large castle.
Merrivale Monuments Tavistock 5.5 mi away

The great number of stone rows, the standing stone over 12 feet high and the hut circles make this one of the outstanding Dartmoor sites, and so close to the road.
Also a nice little bouldering site, plenty of problems if you want to walk a bit to get there.
