- Cate HClitheroe, UK99 contributionsWorth the slight incline of a walk to get to the top. Lovely views down the fjord towards the sea, lovely views inland. - trish gBirkenhead, UK30 contributionsLovely place for a nice walk and a meal on the waterfront. - Cate HClitheroe, UK99 contributionsWonderful to see the Viking ship sat moored up in the harbour. - Elvira BThe Netherlands99 contributionsThis museum shows some great historical artefacts of Norway. In the first room, the vikingship (merchant) Klåstad is on display. This was our main reason to visit, since the Vikingshipmuseum in Oslo has been closed for some years for major renovations.
Other rooms cover Middle Ages and local whale hunting history, with a focus on the life of Foyn.
The museums also has an interactive setup which will appeal to the younger visitors.
It was not busy at all when we arrived on the first Sunday of September around 2.30pm and within one hour we saw everything on display.Written September 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. They try to show visitors what it might have been like living here in the middle ages. Lots to see and do. In 2019 the entrance was free.Written June 4, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- AdmiralDinoTonsberg, Norway22 contributionsFirst floor is an art museum and second floor houses changing exhibitions. I enjoyed both floors and thought the combination was great. The museum isn't very big, although big enough for a small town like Tønsberg. It's absolutely worth a visit! There is also a small café there, with a porch overviewing a small park, which is a really nice spot for coffee, regardless of whether you are entering the museum or not.Written July 31, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SignarILevanger, Norway255 contributionsThis small museum is really worth while to visit. Tonsberg is the oldest town in Norway - more than 1100 years old - and was always a maritim town with many sailors originating from here, including all the way back from the Wiking Age ! One of Norway's most renowned men, Svend Foyn, who revolutionized whale hunting by introducing an exploding harpun, was born and lived in Tonsberg, and there are many traces of him found in this mueum along with many other interesting exhibits.Written May 5, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ivan LSweden76 contributionsWe parked the car in Tønsberg and took our bikes along the coastal bicycle route #1 towards Tjøme island and Verdens Ende. There is a separate bike path the entire way so we did not have to mix with cars at anytime. Impressive. There are some cafés, as well as a supermarket and gas stations along the path. You will also find a number of camping grounds. The scenery is mostly farmland and some forest, while Verdens Ende features stunning views of bare cliffs with open sea towards the North Sea.Written August 8, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
