Very unassuming building on the Tromso city centre waterfront, the Polar Museum is easily accessible by public transit and boasts a wide variety of exhibits, from real artefacts and mementos to exhibitions recreating what life was like for Polar hunters and trappers. A converted Customs House warehouse, the museum boasts rooms dedicated to different aspects of life. Highlights include stories on famed explorers like Roald Amundsen, Henry Rudi, and one of the few females, Wanny Woldstad; features on the different animals, from polar bears to seals to walruses; and the dwellings, tools, clothing, and modes of transportation (including a hot air balloon) used by these famous explorers.

Please take note that this museum is also run by the Arctic University of Norway and combination tickets for the Tromso Museum and the Polar Museum are available, giving patrons a slight discount. There are senior and children tickets available. Because of the historic nature of the building, not all areas may be accessible for those with mobility issues (uneven floors, stairs, narrow passages, etc). While Norwegian is the main language, all the areas have English descriptions. Don't forget to take a moment to walk toward the water outside the building and take pictures of the breathtaking mountains.

The aquarium is currently undergoing some major reconstruction but in late 2025 the seals will enjoy their new home. The seals are the main highlight with feeding shows during the day. Cathrin is hugely knowledgeable about these animals and happy to answer any questions. Tickets are valid throughout the day so you can leave and return later to watch more seal feeding.

The Tromso Museum is an awesome destination that is nestled a bit outside the city centre. Easily accessible by public bus, it features both permanent and temporary exhibitions with a variety of media.

Walk through the phenomena of the Northern Lights and experience the lights in a whole new way, from learning from experts about how the lights form to how the lights have shaped human thoughts on culture. Explore the culture of the Sami people, from how they live to what they believe to how their lives have changed from then until now. Discover artefacts from churches of old in the ecclesiastical art section. Take a hike through the Tromso mountains through the lens of its geological history. Meet the dinosaurs and prehistoric animals that lived in Norway.

Essentially there's something for everyone, if you love exploring science, culture, or history. Being part of the university system, you can also purchase a dual ticket that includes the Polar Museum, which is closer to the city centre.

They boast a guaranteed view of the northern lights at this Arctic University of Norway museum, and it doesn't disappoint. Explore the northern lights in a special presentation in their Planetarium theatre, which showcases a documentary following northern lights chasers over the course of several months, how they lived and of course what they saw. The theatre has limited seating and only one English viewing a day so get there a bit early to ensure you get a good seat. There is an elevator for those who cannot climb the few stairs.

The Science Centre is definitely geared toward younger patrons, with plenty of colourful, interactive displays and exhibitions highlighting weather, carbon dioxide emissions, energy, the human body, and other wonders of science. Enjoyed myself thoroughly in the play and learn environment! One of the awesome parts includes the outdoor mezzanine with spectacular views of the waterfront and the mountains across from Tromsoya Island.

Nestled on the main university campus, it is easily accessible by public transit or by walking about 2 miles from the city centre. You can't miss it as it is situated on a hill, giving it those great views.

Good fun learning about trolls and the fairy tales surrounding these Nordic myths. Best to go when it is quiet so you can take your time reading about them and using the interactive tablets.

Spent a rainy afternoon in Tromso reading in a cozy nook. The library is massive and so well lit. The views on one side are lovely and the whole place has a warm, welcoming ambience. Saw several folks sitting and working away on their laptop and there was also a kids section downstairs to keep the little ones entertained. There’s also a cafe though we didn’t try it out. Perfect if you’re a book lover and have a few hours to spare in Tromso and looking for something chill and relaxing to do.

This is the site of the original Mack Brewery - you get to learn all about the history during a captivating 20 minute video. The tour continues with just one small glass of Mack beer followed by a look at the microbrewery which now operates from here.

I liked this place, but my husband wasn't too interested. Some of the artwork was really interesting and I enjoyed it, some of it I didn't quite 'get'. Still, it was worth a visit.

If the weather is bad this is not a bad place to spend an hour or so. Interesting stories to follow.

Great selection of stores, free parking, possible to charge your electric car. Even a play room for smaller kids if you need some free time and they are over 4 years old

It feels a bit like going on the train to an away day fixture. The seats are from a railway carriage while the walls and ceiling are adorned with football shirts, scarves and flags. So if you’re a fan of football or just like trains then this could be the pub for you. Whilst enjoying a pint we were befriended by a local man called Eric. We chatted over a second pint before parting ways.

The most interesting bit is that you can get onto the vessel and into the cabins. Gives you a good feeling what it might have been to live on it.
In the basement are many boards (Norwegian and English) about the life in the far North and videos about an icebreaker and Roald Amundsen's tour.

There are English booklets to borrow with a lot of information as well as a QR-code to more information. There is WiFi in the museum. But no toilet! Out on the deck is a plastic toilet. Ask inside the museum for the key.

As it is behind glass it can get hot inside when it is sunny.

If you have a combined ticket make sure you get the discount you are entitled to.
