- GRZChicago, IL11,708 contributionsWhen we visited in August 2022 this was THE WINDIEST PLACE I have ever experienced in my life - as much as we enjoyed it, it was hardly possible to fully enjoy it as the wind made it somewhat impossible.
So when we visited in August 2024, and got this place peacefully sunny and no wind I was in a disbelief - it was almost a serene experience, we spent here almost 1.5h just walking around, chilling, taking in the views and of course the flying puffins :)
Parking is limited but free, this is a popular place so people end up parking on the side of the road once the spots fill up. There are no restrooms here so plan your visit along with Vik or Reynisfjara Beach so you can access it there.Written August 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This beach is sadly famous for its dangers, since often sneaker (or killer) waves swallow visitors into the cold ocean, leaving no hope when the beach becomes far.
The sights make you speechless, with the amazing troll rocks and the basalt formations creating a cavern.
Do follow the traffic light indications before entering the beach and never turn your shoulders to the sea for a selfie.... it could be you last one!Written September 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Well equipped and felt very safe walking on the glacier. Views were amazing. Must do on trip to Vik.Written September 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- jjlukeCalgary, Canada2,047 contributionsGreat glacier for a visit, a short hike to get there and plenty of sights to keep your attention. Many tour groups go by here too. Quick tips: The walk is about 15 minutes there to the viewing point. Fairly traversed pathway, paved parking and nothing complicated that requires hiking poles or anything. There was a food truck at the base when we visited. - dputlandChesapeake, VA157 contributionsWe have done this tour in the winter and now in the summer. Winter was easier. The hike to the cave was dangerous at times even with the crampons on our hiking boots. The cave was cool! I would not recommend this tour for small children or anyone with bad knees, bad ankles or bad back. I’m 61 and this was not a bunny slope, it was double black diamond all the way.Written July 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - VilleHelsinki, Finland15 contributionsThis is a must-see attraction for some people. For someone not so involved in the video-based social media scene, this is not that important. The point is to get a great selfie with the plane. Not that the plane wreck would not be quite impressive but maybe not as impressive as its popularity would indicate.
There are a lot of visitors, and the site is rather sensitive to bad weather. The bus connection from the parking lot (just off the Ring Road) is slightly pricey but I do not regret using it. The 45-minute hike from the parking lot to the plane is in very monotonic scenery, so we decided to use the time and effort to something more scenic.
A slightly positive surprise was that despite us visiting the site just in the middle of the high season, it was possible to take photos looking as if the beach was completely deserted.
So, if you know what this is, it is probably worth a visit. If not, then I recommend natural wonders of Iceland.Written July 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim D147 contributionsUpon checking we immediately loaded up for the last tour of the day and drive about 3 minutes to the launch site. First the zip lines are good, nothing super long or fancy if you have zip lined before, but the views are really cool and fun. You have to hike… and hike a little more to each zip line. At first we felt a little rushed but it started to slow down a little letting us enjoy the views.
The final zip line with the bungee was super cool and exciting. We felt safe and had great guides. We would recommend if you are in Vik.Written October 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Their communication in person and by text/email was very prompt and clear, and they were able to quickly squeeze us into the ziplining tour that same day. The guides were great, and while the zipling tour wasn't our first choice, was also fun. They also promptly refunded us for the cancelled paragliding.Written July 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Aled D1 contributionJohann was an incredible guide for our family, including two boys aged 6 and 8. Everything we explored was the perfect level of adventure and included some amazing sights we could never have experienced without him and his local knowledge. Without a shadow of a doubt, the highlight of our entire Icelandic holiday.Written May 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lisa APortland, ME59 contributionsWe are so grateful we chose a private tour with Ice Hunters and feel so very fortunate to have had Simion as our guide. We could not recommend Ice Hunters more highly.
Our family of 6 adults spent the day on Sollheimajokull glacier with Simion in early November. A few had rock climbed, but none of us had tried ice climbing. We ranged in age from 28 -70, all sturdy, but with a broad range of strength, experience and comfort with heights.
Simion helped us pick the best day for our glacier adventure and it turned out to be near perfect conditions: blue sky, low 30’s Farenheit and not too breezy. You cannot be assured of such perfect weather, but you can count on a great adventure, with safety first but also lots of encouragement to try things you never imagined you could do.
First up was securing the crampons to our boots (note that sturdy above-ankle hiking boots are mandatory). Simion carefully fitted each of us with crampons and personally secured all 12 feet to this essential piece of equipment. As the day proceeded I many times thanked the stars that Simion had done this for me. Losing a crampon would not be good I realized on our first steps onto the inclined near-sheer ice. This focus on safety carried throughout the day as he instructed us about the various serious hazards to avoid. He triple checked every piece of equipment we relied on, and then tested it himself. While taking these precautions and helping us understand their importance he still maintained a super relaxed demeanor, allowing us to focus on the incredible beauty of the glacier, its crevasses and caves.
We hiked first to a crevasse that had carved ice steps down. Simion secured a rope to help the descent and instructed everyone how to go down safely. With no comment when it was my turn he casually slipped ahead of me to make sure I got down comfortably. I loved that he did this without any mention that I might be scared or have trouble. He just knew and helped.
Once in the crevasse he secured the ice climbing ropes. He had given us lessons along the way on how to use our crampons and ice tools. Secured by rope to our harnesses we each scaled the 30+ foot crevasse wall, Simion instinctively knowing who to encourage and instruct and who to leave be, secure in his knowledge that we were all safe. It was a total thrill (and a lot of effort!) to make it to the top and see the morning sun peeking over the mountains at the glacier’s edge.
We also each entered the most gorgeous narrow ice cave, an ethereal blue nature-sculpted space for moment of solitude inside the massive glacier.
We climbed back up the ice stairs and headed to the next climb. Three of us were willing to give it a try. Zero pressure applied to those who declined. This one required descending a sheer vertical wall on belay, stepping off the ledge backwards to descend 60+ feet into a narrow crevasse. No stairs out of this one. Just a ledge to rest on briefly before the hugely challenging climb back up. Again, knowing just how to encourage and instruct, Simion got all 3 down and back up safely. Each one came over the top beyond exhausted but also elated at what they had accomplished. Simion encouraged the rest of us to lean out over the crevasse to understand what they had experienced. As he encouraged me to step further to lean out over the crevasse (securely attached by harness and rope) he asked if I could see the bottom: “Yup” I lied, knees knocking. To the next to approach the edge he said “Now no cheating like your mom! Look to the bottom.” What a great touch for a guide, allowing me to fudge and beat a hasty retreat because he knew I was too scared, but prodding the next in line to fully experience the moment because he knew she could do it.
As we headed off the glacier we peppered Simion with questions. He is full of knowledge and experience and was happy to share what he knew. We looked across the glacier to see several large groups waiting in line for their few minutes to try a skill, none approaching the attention and challenges Simion had offered us. How lucky were we? Very lucky.Written December 12, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
