What travelers are saying
- old-man-orangeOrange, CT354 contributionsWe were touring with a group - from Gate1 Travel and this was a stop along the way.
It was a drizzly December day- which actually added to the scenic effect. It is a must stop as the beach itself is very cool - as well as the scenery of hills and a church, and we actually were passed by a group on horseback.
We usually try to travel in May or September when you are likely to get nicer sunny weather - but Iceland is one of the few destinations where dark drizzly weather in December is actually OK. Our tour with Gate1 Travel was well done - and advisable- and this was one of many destinations we explored in incredible Iceland

The waves were rough when we went later in the day.Written January 3, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Nicoleta R49 contributionsThe views are unreal. Being so high you can admire the black beach in its entirety. Be sure you’ll have warm and waterproof clothes and shoes. It’s pretty windy up there.Written December 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Sergiy MDublin, Ireland1,978 contributionsGlacier, frozen river, it is but it definitely doesn't look as expected, especially in the mouth of the glacier. Be prepared to see something unusual and probably unbelievable. Must be seen.Written January 8, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jjlukeCalgary, Canada2,046 contributionsGreat glacier for a visit, a short hike to get there and plenty of sights to keep your attention. Many tour groups go by here too. Quick tips: The walk is about 15 minutes there to the viewing point. Fairly traversed pathway, paved parking and nothing complicated that requires hiking poles or anything. There was a food truck at the base when we visited. - MegMToronto_ONToronto, ON8 contributionsI had read lots of reviews about the Ice Caves changing prior to this tour, but I'm glad I ignored them because we absolutely loved our experience. We got lucky with a beautiful sunny day ( the only one our whole trip), and I expect the type of weather you get will shift your experience as it does with most things. Our guide was excellent. My 6 and 8 year old did so great. They knew this was a serious hike, and they needed to behave themselves. There are only thin ropes protecting from the side of the glacier, so parents need to keep a close eye on kids. I suggest bringing your own crampons if you have kids, too. We did, and the guide said it was good that we did because he was unsure if he'd find the small enough ones. This was an expensive tour, but it was all of our highlight of our trip to Iceland.Written December 24, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Karim MaaroufCairo, Egypt956 contributionsThe crash site is close to Vik. However, it is quite far from the road. You can take a bus for around 20EUR to and from the site or you can hike for about 3 hours (both ways). I would recommend the former option, since there is nothing to see along the way. Another option is to take an ATV tour on the black sand beach which stops by this point. It is definitely a unique thing to see so you should consider coming here if you have time.Written November 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - product-of-canadaToronto, Canada2,482 contributionsThis church, with the coast as the backdrop, is used in many promotional photos in Iceland. You will visit it as part of many tours that do the South Coast day trip.
I was glad to have visited it from the outside. Some blue sky would have been nice for the photo, though.
Right in town, at the bottom of this hill where the church is, by the water, is a huge gift shop in addition to a grocery store. This was some of the best selection I've ever seen for souvenirs during our 1 week stay. Could not believe I could find a great toque for about $14 USD.Written September 24, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
