Housed in three steep-roofed buildings along the harbor, this museum will tell you everything you could want to know about the industry that created a Gold Rush-style boom and bust for Iceland. Everything from herring boats to the attic dormitories for the young women who flocked to do the salting and packing (even stockings and bras hanging from clotheslines) is laid out and thoroughly explained by guides. The herring trade collapsed due to overfishing, but the spirit of the people survives in this unique museum.

The ticket for the herring era museum includes a visit to the Folk Music Centre. This is beautifully kept and shows just what music - and instruments - were in favour in the 1800s and 1900s in a small fishing community. The women made all of the music, as the men were away at sea. Two of the instruments I had never heard off, much less hear, but the demonstration of how to play them was beautifully done.

Martin is totally awesome! He and his family members own and operate this incredible brewery in a restored fish processing warehouse. They aren’t open all the time so contact Martin for private tours and events big and small (he can host huge events). I took a solo private tour and it was awesome!

By Icelandic standards it's rather a big church. It was built during the prosperous times when herring was plentiful and Siglufjörður fish factories produced some 20% of country's exports. The center of Siglufjörður attests to that with other signs of former glory.

So many cameras from so many years, some of them are so complicated, you wonder how they managed to use them without todays technology.

Had a wonderful time kayaking on the Icelandic Sea in Siglufjordur! I can not speak highly enough of Gestur and my experience-he is very knowledgeable, patient and fun. Gestur taught me the correct way to kayak (thank you!) and provided such excellent service. We explored nearby shipwrecks and the ruins of a fish meal factory while he explained the local history. Finished off with a swim in the sea as he took photos. Top Mountaineering is Top Notch!

In perfect weather, in a beautiful small village,( and a stunning 1 hour drive from Akureyri!), this easy day trip was one to remember. Our guide Tom, was charmingly charismatic and knowledgeable. Not only was he excited to share the history of the town he now calls home, but he was also an excellent coach for those that adventure via mountain bike frequently (or infrequently!) My husband Brian and I say this was our favorite excursion of our tour because of how immersed you become in the landscape and scenery. The assisted mountain bikes truly made our time here enjoyable - similar to traditional mountain biking, you earn your experience. This however, was the perfect balance. Tom made sure we were comfortable, explained the bike well (it was our first time on E-bikes) and listened to our experience level and what we were looking to get out of the 3 hour trip. It went by too quickly… time flies when you’re having fun! Thank you, Tom (and Soti Summits!!) for the memories! They’ll definitely last a lifetime!
