My daughter and I were visiting from the UK for her birthday and some 14 years ago had attempted to see whales off the coast of California but we were unlucky. Coming to Iceland this was top of our list and I chose Elding as they are a family operation and have been running tours for many years. From the moment of booking and then embarking the boat I knew we were in good hands. Emily our marine biologist guide for the trip was clearly highly knowledgeable and experienced. We were astonished at how soon there was a sighting and then more, culminating when a resting humpback whale drifted so near to the boat and seemed undisturbed by us. What a privilege to see these amazing creatures at such close quarters - it was beyond our hopes and dreams. Now we have memories that we will re-live and treasure forever. Thank you Elding team, for all your care to ensure we all had the best possible chance to sight the whales and your great care in navigating around the sightings to ensure the welfare of the whales is paramount. I could not recommend Elding more highly to others seeking a whale watching experience above all others. They advised everyone to stay down on the lowest deck where it was warm and they would tell us when it was time to try to see the Northern Lights. They had huge signs reminding everyone not to leave their phone in the (free) snow bib overalls that they provided for guests (I almost forgot mine lol). And finally, they gave out tips on how to photograph the Northern Lights, which I hadn't even thought about! - MegNobLancashire, UK12 contributionsMatthew was the star of the show as our tour guide, and Aran kept us safe and laughing as the best driver you could ask for. Together, they were a dynamic duo that made the whole day a blast!
The fun facts? Equal parts hilarious and fascinating—it’s like we got a comedy show with a side of trivia.
And the geyser stop? Absolutely bonkers. At one point, it erupted six times in three minutes! Nature really showing off there.
As for the Secret Lagoon, it was chef’s kiss. So hot, so relaxing—I could’ve happily turned into a raisin and stayed there forever.
The day went off without a hitch, and I’d 74/10 recommend this trip to anyone looking for a perfect adventure.
Fun fact about the UK: Did you know it’s illegal to handle salmon suspiciously in England? We were offered overalls in case you didn’t bring waterproof pants and jackets. Our tour was considered “rough” due to 20-30min winds and gusts up to 40mph. I pregamed with a meclizine 24 hours prior to the trip and then again 3 hours prior and did not get sea sick. They do offer the pills there free of charge but it won’t do much since it takes 30-60min min to work in my opinion. So if the weather forecast is looking rough, pregame with meclizine ahead of time. We saw some porpoises but no whales. Disappointing but not the captains fault. I was worried we might not see any whales, but figured the thrill of speeding out to sea on the boat would still make the trip worthwhile. Fortunately, we ended up seeing two humpback whales, followed by a solo one, and then three together. It was an unforgettable experience. The boat got close enough for us to really take it all in—it’s something I’ve never witnessed before. After more exploring, a dolphin started swimming alongside the boat, staying with us for a while. It was incredible and made the whole trip absolutely worth it. The boat is very comfortable and the staff are incredible, nothing felt like too much on either of the boat trips. We navigated quite some swells which we loved as we had so many birds and puffins fly around us. The rib was beautiful and new. The scenery is etherial. - Marina P1 contributionThank you for the wonderful experience! Our tour guide Hjalti was an absolut expert. As a local, he knows the icelandic culture and shared all of his knowledge with the group. We were relieved that we didn't had to drive ourselves in the harsh conditions, but the guide was an excellent driver and managed it very well. The stops and excursions we made on the tour were just perfect. Although we had not much daylight, we did manage to do all of the stops with enough time to explore the beautiful nature of the island. Unfortunately we received a call in the morning to say that the whale-watching trip on that day was cancelled due to weather, but it was re-booked for another day. The Northern Lights trip did go ahead and the trip was as good as we could have expected in the circumstances. The boat was large with all the facilities you would expect, plus warm body-suits were available to allow us to stay on deck if desired without getting frozen. We did get to see the lights, although it was only for the last 30 minutes of the trip and they were fairly underwhelming in all honesty. Obviously that’s not the fault of the tour company, but it did mean we needed to book additional trips on subsequent nights to try and see a better show, as having technically seen the lights on our booked trip, we couldn’t take advantage of the offer of additional free trips should the lights not appear.

Our captain was able to point them out and explain them too. We had a night of green color all around us. It was very cold but there is a lower area to get out of the cold and enjoy some hot beverages for purchase. - Kim DConwy County, UK24 contributionsWe went out in very cold and choppy waters, but the company provided seasickness tablets for you to take prior to boarding, and I have to say they worked!
We were a little disappointed that conditions meant that although we did see two whales, we did not see much of them at all. The first whale we were chasing out to see and then the captain suddenly decided to leave that one because of the choppy waters.
The minky whale we saw next didn't really show very much, but it was still an awesome experience.

The one cave that had the beautiful acoustics was absolutely amazing. I would recommend this company to everyone.
