What travelers are saying
- MaryTucson, AZ35 contributionsMy knees kept me from reaching the top of the mountain. I had a marvelous time just wandering the streets of the village. It is absolutely everything you could want an old European village to be. Cobblestone streets jutting back from the main walk. Stark white walls with bright flowers in bloom. No cars. Lovely shops including food and other supplies. Beautiful clothing and jewelry at a fair price. And scores of cats who definitely own the village. I could have spent days there.Written March 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- gothgrlRhodes, Greece261 contributionsApparently this hike is rated as moderate to difficult. My daughter and I, however, found it really easy. We started from a bus stop (Tsambika Monastery) and then, after a short climb to the car park and then the 300 steps to the Monastery, we got to enjoy the most amazing views over the Tsambika beach and Faliraki on the other side. The trail was almost empty, with not many people around, which we loved 😊 Rhodes island in the spring really is something else - the Nature is just waking up, there were so many beautiful poppies and other flowers/plants on the way to the monastery, also the most beautiful birds of prey up in the sky.
We’d walked down to Tsambika beach after the hike to the Monastery (so empty and absolutely gorgeous) had a swim there, fed some stray cats, then took a bus back to Rhodes town for some much needed, delicious Greek food (all the tavernas around the Monastery and Tsambika beach were closed, so it’s advisable to bring water and snacks if you decide to do that hike in early spring).Written March 30, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. In March, the Old Town isn’t busy (I think the centre of nightlife moves to the Νέο Πόλη before the season) but there are still some tavernas and bars open, mostly at the Hipokrates Square. Also, some tourists shops are open - which was great as we always buy ‘a piece of Greece’ to bring back home, this time we’d found two really gorgeous cushions, which already sit proudly on our sofas and another hand painted picture from our favourite shop not far from the Mosque. We love the Old Town of Rhodes whatever the season.Written March 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I imagined the hustle and bustle of the street markets that would of been lined up close to the walls on the streets . You could take a side street and just follow it along and come across some gorgeous flowering trees, cats lazily sleeping on the street in the shade or in a windowsill. So many things to take pictures of. I suggest take your time, enjoy and take in the history here, because it is EVERYWHERE you look.Written December 27, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Outi MHameenlinna, Finland2 contributionsThe harbor area, from where many different boat tours and cruises depart. There are also terraces where you can watch the hustle and bustle of people and admire wonderful yachts.

This Sephardic synagogue dates back to 1577, but there has always been a Jewish presence on Rhodes for 2,300 years. At times through history, they were persecuted by many of the Islands rulers, including the Romans, Christian Knights Hospitaller, Italian Fascists, and upon their collapse in 1943, the direct control of Nazi Germany. Except for today, Jewish merchants only live and prosper under the Muslim rule of the Ottoman empire, building six new synagogues including this one.
Today, the Kahal Kadosh Shalom Synagogue is only used for services during the summer, when there are lots of Jewish tourists as there are very few Jews living on the island. It is typical of a Sephardic house of worship with the bimah or podium, from which the Sefer Torah is read, in the center of the sanctuary, surrounded by a black and white mosaic made of local pebbles.
There are also scattered around the interior of the synagogue a number of plaques in Hebrew and in Ladino, the language of the Sephardic (Spanish} community, to those who maintained the synagogue.
On either side of the doorway leading out to the center courtyard are two Torah arks, in this courtyard is a fountain and Plaque commemorating Jewish Holocaust victims from Rhodes,
TIP: The gift shop is worth visiting for those hard-to-find souvenirs.
