If you have children around the pool there is no life gaurd. Beach rocky. The evening shuts at 11pm, older bar man RUDE. There is a bar next door and one a little further up the road.

We had an unforgettable experience visiting Arkadi Monastery. The combination of its stunning architecture, profound history, and serene surroundings made it a truly special destination."

Stopped without making an appointment and we were given a tour with all our questions answered.
Sadly there was no olive oil testing and none to buy as they had only 5litre cans and we weren't expected to buy any
Lovely friendly lady who aimed the chat at the level of the children as well as us - our 13 year old was taken with the idea that a donkey owner years ago was the Elon Musk of his era..

Nice walk up to the top and fabulous 360 view. Its interesting to see how all the different invaders of greece and crete particularly, have influenced the architecture. The buildings inside the fortress are not accessable to visitors apart from the mosque. The buildings are in use.

Before going to Rethymno for the first time, we read several reviews of the beach. Some weren’t so good but I’m pleased to say that our visit was fine.

You can walk to the beach from the old town - if it’s too hot , it’s €6 in a taxi.
We rented x2 loungers and umbrella for €9 for the day. The loungers were run by a nearby restaurant but there was no obligation to eat there or purchase anything (we didn’t).

It’s easy to get into the sea - which is warm compared to Spain. A few pebbles but nothing much. As for cleanliness- we’ll, it’s not spotless. There is a little little and a few twigs etc but it’s a city beach. I’ve seen worse in other countries. It’s not an issue really.
Plenty of bars and restaurants a ross the road. It’s safe to leave your stuff while you have lunch.

    Enjoy

First class service by the staff, everyone was super friendly and attentive but not disruptive allowing for relaxation. My wife and I booked a cabana and it was great, a lot bigger than we needed but enjoyed the multiple seating options. Only thing that I would change would be the beach. The beach is quite rocky and it made swimming in the ocean not desirable. The day we visited was windy so the waves were large and with all the uncomfortable rocks trying to enter the water we only did it once.

This can be found after a short and scenic drive along the coast from Plakias, and it’s well worth the trip. The location is pretty spectacular, perched high above the Aegean, and its positioning took on a special significance during the Second World War when the monks were actively involved in Cretan resistance, sheltering allied troops, and escorting them down to the sea where groups of them, often Australian, were rescued by submarine. Inside the monastery itself there is a small museum – but also of interest is the fountain with an inscription in Greek which is a perfect palindrome; in English it translates as “Wash your sins, not only your face”.

Memorial for Resistance and Peace: This was an unexpected find – we passed it on driving down to the Preveli Monastery, so we stopped off on the way back. The gates were locked, so were we wrong to climb the fence to be able to take a proper look at the memorial? It’s very impressive. Most striking is the statue of the armed priest, a representation of the Abbot at the time of the evacuation, Agathangelos Lagouvardos.

As we traveled around Crete by car we made a quick stop in Rethymno to check out the nice old town and walk around. When we went in March many of the shops and restaurants were closed so we only spent about 15 minutes here but it looks like a nice spot to sit and have a drink. This was part of an hour long walk around the old town before sunset and it was worthwhile for our group. The water was very clear here and we could see some fish in the water. We also saw many cats hanging around.

-Did this mid-October, perfect conditions: clear sky, temperature in the mid-20's.

-Started at Mygero Refuge (one room is always open, and so are the toilets but you'd better use the bush as the toilets are filthy, courtesy of barbaric, uncivilised people).

-Followed the single path leading up, no chances of mistakes.

-It gets colder and more windy as you ascent, so bring layers. I am used to quite cold environments so I was wearing shorts, 2 t-shirts and a plain cotton hoodie, but most of the other hikers had long hiking trousers, shells or windbreaker jackets. You do you.

-The paved path is very easy to follow and climbs steadily, rarely relents and gets you to a big ridge, which is more or less haldway through the hike: after that, the incline eases up and it's almost flat up to the summit.

-Once you get to the ridge, you'll be exposed so be ready for strong winds and colder climate.

-Just follow the path to the summit, it's marked with red dots every 1-3meters, can't really miss it. Occasionally there also is a "tourist" signpost pointing downhill.

-Try to ignore the vultures circling low over your head, you're not gonna die and they aren't aggressive. Take a close-up picture, if anything. They're gorgeous.

-At the top, the reward is breathtaking, absolutely fantastic. Take it all in and enjoy being on the highest point of Crete.

-It took me 2h15' to reach the summit, at a leisurely pace (I hadn't hiked in 8 months) and stopping to take lots of photos , and with a single 5' break (I needed to put on my hoodie once I had reached the windy ridge). The way down was 1h or so.

-WARNING: there are no shade nor water sources whatsoever, and the sun can be quite hammering despite the mild temperatures. Bring water and sunscreen (or a hat?) accordingly. If you do this between May and September, be ready to bake.

-PLEASE don't be a cvnt and take your rubbish with you.
