The fortress is incredibly well-preserved and offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region. As you walk through the thick stone walls, you can imagine what life must have been like for the Venetians who built it.
The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking, giving you a panoramic look at the harbor, the city, and the surrounding coastline. Water is mostly clean, there is only seagrass. It's located not far from Heraklion city center, it's a 15 minutes drive by bus. There aren't many tourists, mostly locals visit this beach, which is nice. We took a chance and stopped in without a reservation. We had a lovely tasting of 8 wines plus some tapas (cheeses, cucumber, tomatoes, herb pies, etc). It was wonderful to learn about this family winery run by sisters. They are an organic winery and all of the wines we tried were excellently made. The views were spectacular and hospitality was wonderful. We were greatly surprised at what was there,and even though our party was 4 adults the info was excellent.! Great experience ,covering interesting imagery, tasks of optical illusions and for families great facilities.! Only downside no cafe .however there was a room with tables to have own food..
