A mini guide to Athens

- What’s one thing visitors shouldn't miss?Naturally it’s a must to visit the Acropolis and Parthenon, the world famous monument. Early morning or after 6 p.m. are better as both times are cooler, with sweeping views from the top as far as the nearby islands. Nowadays it’s necessary to book a ticket in advance as visitor numbers are limited.
- What do you wish tourists knew about Athens?Though what may seem a chaotic and noisy city at first, there are beautiful spots to escape to such as the National Gardens by the Parliament in Syntagma Square to the highest point in the city center–Lycabettus Hill with walking trails and a small church atop reached by funicular rail.
- Let us in on your favorite restaurants—what makes them great? It’s great to go local at hidden spots in the capital. Head to Varvakeios Agora (central market), the first food market in Athens which opened in 1886. Here you’ll find Cafe Epirus with unusual dishes such as tripe soup–usually eaten at Easter but great for lining the stomach.
- Are there any activities that are better done on weekends vs. weekdays?Irrespective of the day of the week, when August’s full moon falls Athens’s museums and archaeological sites remain open for free from morning into the night. Occasionally the Acropolis Museum will also have the Hellenic Air Force performing a free classical concert in the grounds.
- Which top tourist attraction is worth the hype? Many people shun the idea of a Hop On/Hop Off tour around the capital, deeming it too touristy, but it’s definitely worth it. With routes around the city, to Piraeus port and along the Riviera to the beaches–it’s great to gain your bearings and decide what you’d like to explore more in-depth later.
- Why is Athens special to you?My favorite pastime is exploring Athens—the many islands and mainland destinations—and I encourage visitors to do the same in this unique country.
