You could describe the Douro River in many ways - the very essence of Porto’s existence, or the lifeblood of the Douro Valley which gave birth to Portugal’s acclaimed vineyards. No matter how you view this majestic river, you can’t deny that there’s something special about this river. With a total length of almost 900 km, most of which is in its originating neighboring country, Spain, the best part of the river is the section in Porto’s historic centre, whereby its beauty is amplified by the colorful building terraces on both sides of the river banks as well as the elegant bridges connecting both sides of the river. I am indeed mesmerized by the beauty of the river, especially during sunset when viewed from the upper deck of the Dom Luis I Bridge.

Almost exactly what you see in the pictures - lots of colour and myriad details. Best spot for phototaking is directly opposite on the Gaia side (across the Luis bridge). Plenty of phototaking spots for pretty much any angle.

Our Airbnb was just across the road from the gardens but we somehow didn't visit it until the final evening. We'd heard the peacocks calling in the days before but hadn't realised how many of them were walking about (and it was very entertaining watching other tourists gingerly approach them for photos).

    Very well presented museum exhibits
    Pleasant park setting
We found the staff on reception unfriendly to the point of being rude

This is the largest park in town. You will find it on Rua Boavista headed toward the ocean and the beach. It is so large that you will find a lot of features here, some monuments, some athletic facilities, biking and hiking, plus a lot of things for kids.

It's scenic and it's where the river meets the sea. You can get here on the little trolley car, or by cab. Since it is close in, it is popular on a sunny day. Food is available nearby.

    Nice place, but not big.
Contains a relatively limited selection of fish, etc.
Priced a bit expensive compared to what the place has to offer

I could happily have spent the entire week I spent in Porto walking the streets, but I did make two trips to the coast, one of which was to this delightful beach. As with the city, expect to pay to use the public toilets.

Took a bit of uphill walking (as is the case with much of Porto) but the view is well worth it. Maybe take a picnic and hang here for a bit.

Nice place for a stroll, with cafes nearby. Easily accessible by car and there is ample parking on the adjacent streets in May. The views of the lighthouse and the pretty buildings lining the road prattle to the bridge add to the atmosphere.

I took the tram to travel down here. It is very tranquil and peaceful. atmosphere. I saw locals jogging along the river. It is so relaxing.
The view here is very beautiful. If the tram is not full, you can enjoy the view of the riverside from the tram window.

Quinta do Covelo is a quiet park and is perfect for those who seek to escape the loud noises of the busy city streets for at least a while. We walked in the leafy pathways of this lovely park for a short time and found it quite relaxing. It would absolutely suit families with young children, as it has an area for them to play to their heart's content! Worth a go!

For those who love to explore exotic gardens, this is a great place. It is full of unusual vegetation. One can study botany here. And it is a lovely place for a stroll or to sit in the shade.

We visited this park on a hot day and found it cool, clean and interesting. The maze was fun and it was good to see lots of locals enjoying the park. Also good to see another part of Porto away from the bustle of the old city area.
