- Herbert C1,800 contributionsYou could describe the Douro River in many ways - the very essence of Porto’s existence, or the lifeblood of the Douro Valley which gave birth to Portugal’s acclaimed vineyards. No matter how you view this majestic river, you can’t deny that there’s something special about this river. With a total length of almost 900 km, most of which is in its originating neighboring country, Spain, the best part of the river is the section in Porto’s historic centre, whereby its beauty is amplified by the colorful building terraces on both sides of the river banks as well as the elegant bridges connecting both sides of the river. Best spot for phototaking is directly opposite on the Gaia side (across the Luis bridge). The view here is very beautiful. We walked in the leafy pathways of this lovely park for a short time and found it quite relaxing. It would absolutely suit families with young children, as it has an area for them to play to their heart's content! The maze was fun and it was good to see lots of locals enjoying the park.
