Located in the centre of a lovely park, (which is also a very busy traffic, roundabout), stands this proud monument dedicated to the Heroes of the Peninsular War. Celebrating a coalition of british and Portuguese forces which defeated, Napoleon. Definitely worth a visit.

Very cute outdoor art in a big popular park. Lots of people around this area as the university is here as well as some historic buildings, so lots of tourists. These figures of guys sitting on supports laughing are cute and pleasant.

The viscount Almeida Garrett can boast many titles - poet, orator, novelist, journalist, politician, nobleman, revolutionary and humanist to mention a few.

He lived from 1799 to 1854 and was of course born in Porto - which is why he has such a prominent place in front of the Town Hall.

The sculpture is in bronze was put up in 1954 at the 100 anniversary of his passing. The front is quite elaborate but the also very visible back side is still very rough.

If you stand and look at it, you realise the sheer bravery of these people that put their lives at risk to leave dry land to help people in difficulty at sea. Hats off to them i say.
