- KeithC894Interlaken, Switzerland47 contributionsWe found this museum to be arguably the best thing about Guimaraes. The first room is a little boring and the modern art exhibition jars a little with the main subject matter of the museum, but the last rooms were full of interesting items, many grouped together. We took the combo ticket (Castle, Palace and Museum) and you really cannot complain about the value.Written February 22, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Iolanda Guerra e AndradeLisbon, Portugal1,844 contributionsThe Art Centre of José Guimarães is quite an interesting modern building located in an equally modern-like concrete patio garden that almost certainly draws the passers-by. I personally felt the highlight of the permanent and temporary collection was the rich ensemble of African masks mostly from Angola, Congo, Benin and Ivory Coast to be seen in two exhibit rooms and pertaining to José de Guimarães' private collection. For those who are moderrn Art lovers José de Guimarães' own paintings might also be a "must".Written November 12, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sally BOceanside, CA1,584 contributionsSeveral things made this an especially fun visit! First of all, we had just visited Citania de Briteiros, but couldn’t tour the close-by museum as it was closed for lunch. So, we really wanted to see some of the collection of artifacts from the site. Second, everyone we talked with there was so friendly and helpful! The woman at the ticket counter said she had a high school student intern that could tour with us, and she was delightful. She read to us from an English “cheat sheet” and tried hard to also answer our questions (which was more challenging). We felt very welcomed and enjoyed the collection, though it was not well labeled for English speakers. (Google Translate came in handy).Written October 23, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Iolanda Guerra e AndradeLisbon, Portugal1,844 contributionsDespite not having been able to take advantage of the numerous cultural initiatives this Centre has been putting forward, according to what I was told, I was nevertheless able to see a cartoon exhibit and the magestic gardens of the former Palace from the outside. It is a pity the gardens are not open to the public because from what I saw a stroll around would have made my day.Written November 13, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dimitris LSydney, Australia42,559 contributionsNucleo Arqueologico da Associacao Comercial e Industrial de Guimaraes is a great looking building. This is a 19th century building originally belonging to a wealthy family. After the Associacao Comercial e Industrial de Guimaraes took over the building they did some renovations and during that process they also carried out some archaeological excavations on the site. Those excavations revealed some amazing finds ranging in age from the 13th to the 19th centuries. They include some beautiful ceramic and metallic artifacts which shed light on the history of Guimaraes. Worth seeing! The building itself is rather architecturally wonderful and the facade is absolutely stunning.Written April 26, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gail R2 contributionsIf you thought this was just a science experience place for school students, you are in for a pleasant surprise. If, like me, you have walked around the streets of the Zona de Couros, and want to know more about the history of the leather industry in Guimaraes, don't miss this living museum.
Most of the buildings in the leather-making district are inaccessible, but here you can actually walk through the workshops (beautifully restored) and see the original tanks, living quarters, courtyards, water channels and tools.
I was given a personal guided tour by a knowledgeable staff member. He explained the many stages of the tanning process and the different roles of the leather workers. The Centre has a large collection of old photos and documents, captured in an interactive digital display. I was fascinated to see women as well as men did this very heavy work.
While you're there, pop next door to the Instituto de Design, which incorporates another converted tannery shed.Written October 1, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Its worth a visit for a half hour. We were the only visitors there.Written August 15, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
