The main landmark in Braganca is a must visit place while in the town. Easy to get to on foot, it provides a great viewpoint for the rest of the town and the surrounding countryside.

The Castle is situated within the old city walls and this Citadel area is the best part of Braganca with narrow, cobbles streets an lovely old buildings.

An easy and enjoyable 30 minute drive from Braganca, Rio de Onor is a lovely village in an idyllic rural setting. It is a delightful cluster of old, stone houses in narrow cobbled streets and has a lovely little river running through the middle of the village.

It was very quiet while we were here so we could fully appreciate the serene ambience, but the fact that there are a few cafes would suggest that at times it is firmly on the tourist trail.

This is a lovely unspoilt area with a mixture of verdant landscapes and more rugged terrain. There are several villages and small towns to explore or to simply use for cafes etc.

The driving here is superb, but I say that as someone who enjoys driving on winding, bendy mountain roads. They are easy enough to drive but be aware that they might not be suitable for passengers who suffer from car sickness. Plenty of stops might be required!

Interesting exhibition by Graça Morais: Inquietações.
I didn't fancy as much the other exhibition by a galician artist

Had a look round here in the castle. Had to work out the meaning of the Portuguese information, lots of guns! Some explanation of the very complicated history of Portugal.

The city walls are very well conserved. You can have a great walk, and watch the city outside the walls, as well the small houses within the citadel. There you can find small restaurants and bars, the castle and the military museum. It is possible to park the car inside.

Dating from the late medieval period this is a remarkably well preserved piece of Romanesque architecture. The building was constructed in two layers with the lower part designed to collect and retain water and the upper part used as a sort of town hall.
Situated within the citadel it is well worth seeing.

If you know other science centres for children, you will find this one too small. But the truth is that it isn't as exhausting as others, and kids really had fun with all the exercises.

The original church from the 11th/12th century was one of the oldest in the city. No traces of the original structure remain and this “new” version was constructed at the end of the 16th century. It is a large church with three naves divided by brick columns that contrast with the walls and ceiling.

The highlight feature is surely the very ornate reredos (altarpiece) which includes statuary, intricate columns, and almost too much gilded artistry to take in.

Situated within the Citadel this is a church worth seeing.

We were expecting more of Sacred Art but the displayed assets are far beyond that limited definition. Very interesting permanent exhibition. A must see if you're visiting the town.

The Church of Se is the Old Cathedral. It was first constructed in the 16th century as an intended convent but was eventually handed over to priests of the Society of Jesus who used it to found a college, and the church of the college eventually served as a cathedral in 1768.

When one visits cathedrals they are often very much the same, but this one is different in that it is relatively small and narrow. Other than that, it fits the stereotype with statuary, paintings etc, and a splendidly ornate reredos. The other stand out feature for me are the plain whitewalls that contrast perfectly with the dark woof of the arches and the blue ceiling.

Two exhibits, one of architectural sketches a photos and the other of works of a Portuguese artist. The very enthusiastic director highlighted what we should observe in exhibit. As well, he had a wealth of information about Portugal and its history. A delightful visit !

Though definitely not the best place regarding Jewish history in Portugal, it is still the only one in Tras-a Monte and has some interesting information as well as documents and 17 century authentic pictures. Explanations in English as well. If the lady in charge is not there during opening times. go to the next door museum of contemporary art and they will open it for you. Entrance was free
