Incredible place ! The gardens absolutely beautiful so far the best one in Funchal.
I love it and I highly recommend .
By the way you really need couple hours for seeing the garden and have the full experience of the place .

We visited in May just to check out the area and made the mistake of parking free at the lower big, yet super busy parking lot, and from there it's quite a walk to the top area where the buildings and hike start are.

In December I decided to drive all the way to the top, especially because we were with my parents who wouldn't ever be able to complete that walk from the lower parking lot - so I encourage you to do the same, it's a paid parking and there is always some spaces as people come and go, those who hike tend to leave the cars in the bigger free lot from which they "warm up" for their journey :)

There are some souvenir shops here, a restaurant and paid restrooms/toilets.

The views are amazing, whether with clouds or not - actually the clouds here and there add more to the magic of this place!

Easy drive up all the way to the top, perfectly paved road, no 4x4/AWD needed - just take your take on the lower gears starting from Funchal as it is a very uphill/steep ascend and you can only do it on the lower gears.

Even if you dont hike it's still a great place to visit, and I would further add to drive also to the other end at Pico Ruivo and Pico Achada do Teixeira - Mountain Spot Café for a great lunch - you will see Pico do Arieiro from there as well - very impressive vistas!

Great views over the town of Funchal.
As someone who hates heights, the car itself felt fine, and I was perfectly happy watching the world go by.

Very busy on the seafront with a long queue, so we only had a single down from the top.
