    Definitely a challenge worth doing!

My first hike in Madeira was the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, I recommend getting there at 7:am the latest to have time to join the rest of the hikers in watching the breathtaking Sunrise at the Miradouro do Juncal viewpoint. Choose a clear day with good weather predictions for the best experience.

It's also the least amount of people the earlier you do it. People mention the air being thin due to the altitude, however this was nothing that I experienced. The hike is quite challenging, especially going back, but totally worth it as you get to conquer a mountain peak at a relative entry-level plane.

Hiking shoes is a must (preferably hiking socks as well), warm clothing (wear layers, as it may get warmer later on) and plenty of water. Bring good spirit and determination!

The hike, Ca 14km back and forth, alternatively you can do PR1 to Pico Ruivo and the much shorter and more touristy PR1.2 Verrda do Pico Ruivo to Achada do Teixeira (45min ca) back, and then get a taxi. This option would require you to take a taxi to the PR1 starting point (Pico do Areeiro Belvedere) to begin with, which is quite an expensive option, so best recommended for groups perhaps. I never bothered with PR1.2 as I was told the views were nothing to those of PR1 that I experienced.

If in Madeira and you got a good level of physical condition, DO IT!

Our first hike in Madeira. Parking can be challenging as it can get busy. There is a shuttle that you can take down (and up) to/from the Rabacal house that is quite steep, but a paved path. Make sure you have a mask if you plan on using the shuttle. The complete hike without shuttle for us (2 adults and 2 kids - ages 14/12) took just under 4 hours. Very nice and would recommend highly.

Don't think i have ever been to a 'tropical garden' before but love tropical style gardening. Of its type this was great. €12.50 to get in and worth every penny. Literally, across the road from the cable car station. As it is on a hill, once you have walked down to the far end of the garden, it is a hard slog to walk back up. Don't necessarily do what we did- which was to think it was near the Botanical Garden and do both together, before we got the toboggan back down. The botanical garden involves a second cable car, €11.75pp return) and has a €6 entry fee. Again it is very step in places and you feel like you have had a work out. There are actually about 6 bus routes which go to that at the lower entrance and a cab rank, so you can do that separately. Monte is also served by a bus if you have a fear of heights and don't like cable cars.

Busy but queues move along fast enough. Fabulous views of course. €12.50 one way (if you are getting the whicker toboggan down) €18 return.

Really great place and amazing sea views with friendly staff, but the lizards 😳 they were everywhere and crawling on my feet when sitting to eat :yuck: I’m not a fan of slithering things but appreciate they have a safe space amongst the visitors and rocks there.

Only a small pebble beach here and if you’re not eating at the restaurant there’s not much else to do besides swim and sun bathe-which is not a complaint ✨

Make a reservation for the restaurant as it gets crowded quickly.

Very different place to visit. A lovely photogenic location. Worth the time to just wander around the pools or go for a swim.

This is (in May, anyway!) a free vantage point at the top of Europe's highest cliff (569m, if I remember correctly!) but, be warned, the weather can change in an instant!

Walking along a levada, is an experience not to be missed in Madeira. It’s quite a trek along sometimes narrow and slippy waterways, you will step through streams, walk under waterfalls and you will get wet! It’s an amazing opportunity to wdd as ok the lush interior of this gorgeous island.

Very easy walk (around 3km both ways) with beautiful views of the valley in the end. Suitable for every age group.

Very nice for a stroll. Go to the top of the park for a reasonably priced cafe and some nice views to the hills and outlying parts of Funchal.

We came here just to see the unusual beach in a lovely secluded setting. In April the water was surprisingly warm. However, no matter how much we enjoyed the scenery, it was really difficult to get comfortable on larger than pebble size beach. Really uncomfortable to walk around and ultimately confined to the concrete area of the restaurant. If only it had proper sand.

What a gem ,- by far the best gardens around Funchal. So peaceful, cool and pretty. A very English garden with pools, topiary, roses, herbaceous borders but some exotic plants too. Well maintained and quiet. Off the beaten track which means few discover it which is a real shame. There is a bus from the centre - it is about 20/25 mins by car. A taxi will cost you about 35 euros return but it is worth it - tea room there as well.

An amazing walk along a beautiful landscape. One of my favourite places to visit. I'd saw the walk is moderate difficulty due to the steepness but definitely worth it.
