Well worth the visit to learn about the history and production of Madeira wine. The tour was informative, reasonably priced (premium) especially given it included two generous glasses of Madeira at the end. It is well worth taking up the offer to by wine at the onsite shop and collect it at the airport after security as it is a lot cheaper to do so and it can be carried as hand luggage on your flight.

We were given a wonderful "Platinum" tasting by Leandro - it was just my husband, myself and a couple from Vienna .... We tasted 8 Madeiras and Leandro kindly threw in a 9th - a very special Madeira indeed, and we felt very honoured! Before the tasting, we were given a tour of the winery, which was fascinating! Thanks to Leandro for a wonderful afternoon up in the hills. It's not quite in Camara de Lobos, we ended up getting a taxi up there from our hotel, and paid the driver a little bit more to wait for us. my husband purchased a couple of their wines to take back home with us The process of making Madeira is very special - and the wines we were given to taste were all wonderful - from very dry to quite sweet ....

Greatly enjoyed our fun and informative tour with the charming and knowledgeable Anna.
Lots to learn about the regional characteristics of the various Madeira grape varieties. Open hearted and generous samples of their fine wines were made available for us to savour.
We immediately acquired a taste for their accomplished and really quite complex wines. Naturally, we were keen to bring a few of their variations home. Fully recommend their tour and also their lovely tipples.

The tasting room is atmospheric but can often be busy with tour parties. The staff can be a little brusque, although they can be won over. The tasting of three different wines, 3 or 5-years old, is ostensibly free but when you come to buy a bottle, as you no doubt will, their prices are significantly higher than other tasting venues or, indeed, any local wine shop.
Personally, I would recommend walking 5 minutes further on and visiting Borges instead.

We went on our own the first time but this time we were with a group visit, so we could taste four of the Madeiran wine and not one. This meant we ended up buying a bottle. In fact almost everyone in the group bought a bottle. Just goes to show that free tasting can mean better business for the distillery.
