TomTom SatNav go a little confused between main roads and VERY step side streets!!! Climbing the mountain up the winding roads, passing through the cloud and emerging into bright sunshine above the clouds was fun.
Wonderful hike, amazing scenery, everchanging nature, breathtaking mountains, dark tunnels, overall great experience!

The highest point on Madeira and easy to reach if you drive up to Terxeira (south of Sao Jorge), park near the excellent restaurant/ cafe there, and take the extremely well-made path up to the peak.
Hiking from Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is a great way to see some beautiful scenery and perhaps challenge yourself a bit.

The whole island is so incredible that coming across this place at the end of a long day still impressed us -- beauty, grandeur, great tall cliffs meeting the surf, long views down the coast... See it if you can.
There are dramatic views of the cliffs falling sheer into the sea, although depending what time of day you visit, the angle of the sun can make taking pictures difficult.

Beautiful stroll in Madiera's rain forest, prettier than a picture, easy walk but has some exposure to steep drops and can be wet underfoot and overhead as you walk under a small waterfall.
Walk started at the levada do Rei cafe and went up into the beautiful native Laurissilva forest as far as the source of the levada at Ribeiro Bonito where we stopped for a picnic.

This is a quite unique point to visit which tells you about the past volcanic activity o the island, with unique geometric lava formations and nice views of the ocean and the golf course nearby.
Its stunning , and if you cant appreciate the natural beauty , it also makes a pretty fabulous backdrop for photos .

Very well designed to fit in with the natural rock formations and including many side pools and terraces, the lido offers an excellent morning's or afternoon's entertainment.
Worth a visit, unusual rock pools , weather in north of island isn’t as nice as in south so it is true u may get there and weather is a bit cloudy still warm enough to swim in it .

With an excellent snack bar and restaurant and plenty of parking this is a good place to stop and refresh after arriving from a walk along the beach.
You also get a great view of the large offshore island of Ilheu da Cal which apparently was worked by people for many years, I think for limestone.

It is very easy to access the water from the pebble beach and around the eastern cliffs we saw plenty of schools of fish: parrot fish, wrasses, and other colourful species.
You can reach it by taking the cable cars from the cristo rei statue, by walking down the steep and windy road or by taking the car until the gates then walking the rest of the way.

This park is a gem,it's free and a must see place, even if you just visit to view the Funchal harbour. The plant life here is so varied with a lot of information on many of them. Two minutes from the town centre.
We went in ther gardens more than once to relax and enjoy nature, There is a private garden right at the top, belonging to the house up there, it’s 2 euros entrance, nice to see just once.
