- N FEdmonton, Canada145 contributionsConsidered to be the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon, this originally Moorish medieval townsite is filled with narrow streets, alleyways, tiny bridges, and charming pracas. Located on a steep hill overlooking the Tejo (Tagus) river, it also offers some of the best views of old Lisbon and the river. At the end of May and beginning of June it is also a site of the Festival of Santo Antonio (St. Anthony), a nighttime street festival featuring many crowded street-side eateries grilling sardines and other foods. The streets can become quite crowded, but the atmosphere is friendly and the experience is well worth the walk.Written January 3, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ogi0Sofia, Bulgaria22,954 contributionsAn extremely interesting aquarium. We visited on January 1st, there was no queue to enter. Unfortunately, the penguin section was closed, but there are many other interesting things to see.Written January 7, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - boruthedogCo Kildare195 contributionsA truly magnificent building in Belém with gorgeous cloisters on two levels. It is covered on the highly recommended Lisbon card which allows you access to various buildings and attractions over a time period. chosen by yourself.
Around the cloisters or other rooms to explore and a church next door which unfortunately was closed at the time of my visit.
It is a short walk to the Belém tower so you can do both while you are visiting the area which is a fairly straightforward half an hour tram ride from the old part of Lisbon.Written January 10, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Originally conceived as a military installation to supplement the defence of the mouth of the Tagus river, it is actually quite small, likely of more ceremonial than military significance. However, it has led to an interesting blend of Templar military, ornate Manueline, and Moorish architectural styles. The whole of the tower won't take more than about an hour to see (depending on the crowds), so you would want to combine this attraction with others nearby, such as the Padrao dos Descrobrimentos and the Jeronimos Monastery.Written January 3, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MinaBirmenstorf, Switzerland6 contributionsThe park there is beautiful with a stunning view. There were even peacocks walking around! The Museum part was also interesting with a lot of vases and more. It's also a big area so it isn't very crowded. However outside of it there is a huge line of people wanting to buy a ticket and it was also kind of expensive. But apart from that it is perfect.Written December 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- AnthonyNew York City, NY1,103 contributionsThis is a nice large square in the heart of Lisbon that’s worth a stop. It wasn’t crowded in the morning and was a nice place to take a stroll. We found some nice souvenir stores close to here too.Written December 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas VOakland, CA18,879 contributionsFull of tourists but also full of local people since this is one of the centers of town. Lots of food and coffee here, shopping and historic buildings. An entrance to the Metro. Good place to take a long walk around to explore. Our favorite book store is here.Written November 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Svetlana Balashova10 contributionsBreathtaking view. Worth the effort. The road back down will allow you to explore the old town. Can get there by a taxi. One of the best panoramas of the city.Written December 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- AnthonyNew York City, NY1,103 contributionsThis monument is instantly recognizable and should be a stop if you’re in the Belem area. It is a short walk from the Jeronimos Monastery that includes going through an underground passageway to cross a busy street.
On the outside, it’s pretty easy to take pictures from either side depending on where the sun is. To visit the inside of the monument, tickets can be bought online or onsite. There was only a short line to get in during our November afternoon visit. While an elevator takes you most of the way to the top deck, there are still 40+ steps you need to climb. From the top deck, you get very nice views, including of the Jeronimos Monastery. The top deck is not covered though in case of bad weather. There is a men’s toilet in the basement by the exhibition area and a women’s toilet on the second floor.Written December 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas VOakland, CA18,879 contributionsThere was once an international fair here, and now you will find a big beach, a long promenade, the aquarium, the casino, and lots of classy apartment buildings. It is indeed a new town and full of new attractions. But it is lacking in trees.Written November 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris MayfieldHouston, TX273 contributionsTime Out is a good place to go to eat if you want to have several options to choose from, so it is a typical street food place but maybe a bit higher end as they provide actual plates and glassware instead of the paper kind. We went here twice during our recent trip and found the place packed on the weekend, but not so bad during the weekday.
The variety provided is excellent, so feel free to try different things. I would also mention that they do not accept cash at this market, so bring a credit card.Written January 12, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were lucky to see it on the night when the Christmas tree was lit and there was an accompanying light show on the Arco. It was impressive. But it is also impressive during daylight hours when the Arco stands tall above the Praca and Rua Augusta.Written November 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Juanita C106 contributionsPlease do yourself a favor and enjoy this beautiful, beautiful Museum. I have been to many museums but this is the first that brought me to tears. For several years I read the history of devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and the horrifying aftermath (tsunami and fire) that followed. After purchasing my ticket I entered the "museum" which was actually entering into what had been the beautiful church that welcomed worshipers on that fateful day: November1, 1755. I was met with absolute SILENCE! There were 20-25 people sitting on the steps in quiet contemplation, there was silence, a rare whisper could be detected. I can only describe what I experienced as a respect and reverence--perhaps for the events of Nov. 1st, 1755? I don't know.
There are beautiful, well-marked exhibits as you venture further--don't miss those-- and a wonderful gift shop/museum shop.Written January 8, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
