Ler Devager, LX Factory Lisbon: Having lived in most capital cities like New York, London and Amsterdam, I can safely say there’s nothing like this bookstore meets café meets record shop. It’s nostalgic, vintage, bohemsian and contemporary. Everything rolled into one. Previously a press factory (the old equipment have been left there which now becomes uber cool), it’s now where you get offbeaten titles and old records. Tourists and locals sniff their way in here and marvel at the amazing interior. It’s like ants walking up the metal staircases in amazement. Little wonder it was recognised by New York Times as one of the best and quirkiest bookstores. #eatstylishtravelstylish

I came here a couple days after Livraria Bertrand (the oldest continuously operating bookstore in the world) and I kind of preferred this one, actually.

Don't get me wrong they're both wonderful, but this one has a more authentic local bookstore feel. A bit grimier, messier, minimal lighting inside, overall a bit more history in its walls. I love it. Less tourists too, and that's never a bad thing.

I tried looking for a particular book at Bertrand called "Salazar: The Dictator Who Refused to Die" by Tom Gallagher. I couldn't find it there so I came here and I found it right away.

In my experience in other countries that have had their share of history with authoritarianism, finding books on the subject isn't always easy. I'm not sure if it has to do with willful ignorance, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it's refreshing to find a book about this Portuguese dictator, in Portugal, and in English for a tourist like myself to be able to read. Portugal is a fascinating country with a rich history, and finding books like these - that happen to discuss hard and unflattering topics - only makes me respect them more.

I've been living a couple blocks from this place since last December but only just discovered it. It is a public library made from a former palace, and there is free wifi and work/study spaces too. The interior is covered with antique hand painted tiles and the floors are intricate wood designs. Everything is light! There is a terrace that overlooks the garden in the back where there is a shack that sells refreshments. A great place to hide from the crowds, read a book, catch up on your emails or write a blog post! Occasionally they host events in the garden during the better weather months. It is a library, so if you bring children they must be well behaved and quiet.

We found ourselves at the Biblioteca on a Saturday afternoon and found it to be adequate, as libraries go. But I was really hoping for a grand display of books and other libraryish things, but no. It was a rather mundane building, with a small display area and grand hall with tables. I can imagine the space as a lovely and quiet place to study, but as a tourist destination, it just isn't worth the trip. They did have an old card catalogue, which I had to explain to my 16-year-old.
