What travelers are saying
- David nManchester, UK4,767 contributionsOn the circular walk around the outskirts of Bruges - or of course, you can just walk here from the centre and then return. Either way, its a very good building of historical interest.Written July 2, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim WSindelfingen, Germany8,454 contributionsMy wife and I just crossed over the most photographed St Boniface Bridge in Bruges and came across these four statues of Revolution, War, Hunger and Death. These gentlemen are not people you want to meet. Yet, it is difficult to escape this fascinating group of bronze statues by Belgian draughtsman and expressionist sculptor Rik Poot. As a symbol of the doom of man and the end of time, and as a whole, they represent the four earthly horrors. You can recognise them by the object the horsemen are carrying: a bow (Revolution), a sword (War), a weighing scale (Hunger) and lastly, the emaciated visage of the fourth horseman speaks for itself. You are staring straight into Death's empty eyes. This grouping is well worth viewing and reflecting on.Written May 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim WSindelfingen, Germany8,454 contributionsThis statue stands in front of Royal City Theater of Bruges. It is a cute statue that takes only a few minutes to enjoy. It is Papageno from Mozart's The Magic Flute. Emanuel Schikaneder, who played Papageno on stage in this opera, was a German impresario, dramatist, actor, singer, and composer. He wrote the libretto that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's used to compose the opera.Written April 30, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - high_low73Bergen, Norway772 contributionsLovely experience in a busy part of Brugge. Enjoy some refreshments as you marvel the works of this statue.
The artist couple Stefaan Depuydt and Livia Canestraro created a bronze statue of two lovers in the centre in Bruges in 2002. Located near the Stadhuis (city hall), where local couples get married, the statue has the word love in many languages etched into the base.Written June 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s a beautiful and intricate and if you have any interest in art it’s well worth seeking this one out, even though the city is full of beautiful art.Written May 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This one in Bruges is quite nice and cannot be misses as it it in the heart of the city where you can take boat tours. St John of Nepomuk was the saint of Bohemia (Czech Republic) who was drowned in the Vltava river at the behest of Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. Later accounts state that he was the confessor of the queen of Bohemia and refused to divulge the secrets of the confessional. On the basis of this account, John of Nepomuk is considered the first martyr of the Seal of the Confessional, a patron against calumnies and, because of the manner of his death, a protector from floods and drowning.Written May 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim WSindelfingen, Germany8,454 contributionsJan van Eyck was a painter active in Bruges who was one of the early innovators of what became known as Early Netherlandish painting, and one of the most significant representatives of Early Northern Renaissance art. - Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,282 contributionsThis modest monument is located right next to the popular St. Bonifacius Bridge. We were not aware of Vives' contributions before and seeing the statue made us do a bit of research to find learn that he is considered the "father of modern psychology" and a towering scholar of his time. - TrainbleuBrussels, Belgium37,874 contributionsThe ‘statue of Frank Van Acker’ listed on Tripadvisor is actually a bust. As long-serving mayor of Bruges, Frank Van Acker (1929-1992) did much for the renovation of Bruges. In 1978, his decision to replace the asphalt streets by cobblestones won him the nickname ‘Frank Kalseide’ (Frank Cobblestone). For us, the bust in itself is not worth a detour but its five-star backdrop , the Groenerei facade of the Mansion of the Liberty of Bruges (‘Landhuis van het Brugse Vrije’), is just stupendous.Written December 11, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BradHong Kong, China174,773 contributionsFor those interested in Mary of Burgundy who ruled over Lowlands (1477-1482), you can see a nice equestrian statue along Geerwijnstraat at Muntplein just a few minutes northwest of the main sightseeing area at Grote Markt.
This is the work of Belgian sculptor Jules Lagae and was erected here in 1987. What you see is Mary in royal attire sitting on horseback. The horse is stamping its front left hoof. You'll also the shield with the Bruges Coat of Arms bearing the standing lion on the right hand side of Mary's steed.
It is a good statue, interesting to see if you enjoy monument viewing and are passing through this area of Bruges.Written November 2, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Still, if you pass by it, it is worth a few minutes. Guido Pieter Theodorus Josephus Gezelle was an influential writer and poet and a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium. He is famous for the use of the West Flemish dialect. There is a museum of his works close by and also a small bar named after him. He tried to develop an independent Flemish language separate from the general Dutch language, which had certain more "Hollandic" aspects. The Dutch he used in his poems was heavily influenced by the local West Flemish dialect. His works are often inspired by his mystic love towards God and Creation. Later, his poetry was associated with literary Impressionism, and he is considered a forerunner of that movement.Written May 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TrainbleuBrussels, Belgium37,874 contributionsSculptors Stefaan Depuydt and Livia Canestraro presented the city of Bruges with this bronze sculpture entitled ‘Bouquet for F. van Acker’ (‘Bloemenruiker voor F. Van Acker’ in Dutch). Why it has been listed on Tripadvisor as ‘Monument Bouquet of Flowers’ is a mystery. The sculpture, on the bank of the Dijver Canal, is a tribute to former mayor of Bruges Frank Van Acker (1929 – 1992) in the form of a bronze bouquet. When we first saw it, we thought it looked rather like an umbrella stand. Among other feats, Frank Van Acker put an end to year-long discussions about the style of the new sculptures to be put in the niches of the city hall. Stefaan Depuydt and his wife Livia Canestraro, together with P. Goetinck en J. Franck, were chosen to sculpt forty-eight new sculptures in medieval style. Other work of the couple is to be found elsewhere in Bruges.Written December 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
