What travelers are saying
- Ben FBloomington, IN1,137 contributionsI give my highest recommendation to all travelers in Belgium to visit Bruges and take in its magnificent historic center. It’s a spectacle to the senses, watching the riverboats whiz by along the maze of canals dissecting the city and smelling the delicious cuisine from cafes and outdoor eateries at every turn. While Bruges’ urban core is compact, you could easily spend hours and hours wandering leisurely through back alleys and enjoying local boutiques and galleries.
Time-wise, travelers can spend as long or as little as they’d like here. However, I encourage folks to devote at least a full day to Bruges. I began my adventure at the train station, “driving” my electric wheelchair along the well-marked sidewalks into the city center. Getting from the station to the rough outer boundary of historic Bruges took about five minutes for me (think a jogging pace), and once I was inside the central area, I slowed myself down to mitigate the bumpiness of the stone streets (note to wheelchair users!). I probably spent four or five hours outdoors, having spent the rest of the day eating at restaurants and exploring the wacky French fry museum (see my review of that soon!). Throughout my stroll, I felt safe and comfortable.
Bruges is calling you! It’s charming, walkable, small-town-y, and totally worth a day trip from Brussels or even Amsterdam.Written June 26, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Ben FBloomington, IN1,137 contributionsI adored my time here at Bruges’s main central square area. As a safe, historic, exciting place to eat yummy Belgian fare, drink local beer, watch people go about their day, or take care of all your selfie needs, I encourage all my readers to spend the proper time here and have a joyous time. The area is mostly vehicle-free, which demonstrates a lot of why Bruges is so attractive to walkers and cyclists. Nothing more can be said. It’s the best definition of Bruges.Written June 26, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Ben FBloomington, IN1,137 contributionsIt’s extremely hard to miss the bell tower in Bruges—it’s regal, very tall, and truly unique in terms of its architecture and history. It’s possible to enter inside and climb to the top, but I chose to admire it from the outside instead, since I’m in a wheelchair. Walking along Market Square will offer you great photo-ops of the tower. No matter how you choose to see it, the Belfort will amaze you. Go to Bruges and check it out!Written June 26, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- lynneandkeithCheshire, UK134 contributionsWhat a wonderful tour. Not only did our female guide tell us about the brewing process but also made the entire tour a wonderful experience. She could have been on the stage. So funny and entertaining. Well worth a visit.Written June 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Ben FBloomington, IN1,137 contributionsI didn’t enter the basilica, but it’s easily viewable from the adjacent Burg Square. The architecture is breathtaking and very unique, and the history is outstanding. Next time I’m in Bruges, I’ll definitely make sure I enter and see what it’s like interiorly.

the 6 beers degustation on the plank was a great way to discover their beersWritten June 8, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - DunelmArtsAberdeen, UK971 contributionsIt was astonishing to escape the hustle and bustle, and tourist horse drawn carriages by crossing a bridge over the canal and entering the gates of the Beguinage. Here is an oasis of calm in the midst of the city. Founded in 1245, the Beguinage was a home for devout women who created a religious community without actually taking holy orders. The central courtyard is striking with its tall windswept trees and flowers. The gates are locked in the evening, so any visits must be completed by 18.30. The small chapel was also open when we visited on a Saturday and had information leaflets in multiple languages.Written June 8, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- David MBirmingham, UK302 contributionsJust a lovely place to sit and relax and watch the boats. Known locally as Lake of Love it is just spectacularWritten June 20, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Ben FBloomington, IN1,137 contributionsComparable to its “cousin,” the Market Square, this lovely square offers just as much charm and architectural wonder as anywhere else. I enjoyed admiring the basilica and other great buildings along the plaza as I chowed down on some delicious Belgian waffles nearby. This area is ideal for eating, people-watching, and meeting up with friends or family.
When I visited, I do recall seeing a bunch of cars parked on the square as if it was a parking lot. Maybe it actually is, but I did wish it could’ve been 100% car-free like Market Square. It didn’t impact much, but with my preconceived notion of a heavily car-restricted Bruges, it changed my perspective just a bit.
Regardless, I really enjoyed Burg Square. Recommended a ton!Written June 26, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - AbeonasKent, UK4,285 contributionsA modern experience in a historic building. - Pegwell TravellerKent, UK167 contributionsVery interesting place to visit. Lots to see and learn about, but it's quite cramped and there is no "interactive" element. This is a read and learn place. Due to this and the topic covered it is not child friendly. A number of families were present during our visit and their kids were very bored.
Despite this, we enjoyed it and learnt a great deal.Written June 23, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Ugo CReykjavik, Iceland535 contributionsI know there is so much to see and do in Brugges, but this is one of those places that demand you stop a bit, relax, and just admire life around. Very beautiful placeWritten June 22, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

We were lucky that it was quiet so we had the whole tour to ourselves.
