- hdiasReigate, UK499 contributionsThe Museum of Fine Art in Brussels has an outstanding collection of Flemish primitives and old Masters. There is also an excellent exhibition on Rene Magritte.Written November 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - E T5 contributionsI really enjoyed this museum. It had a great collection of Magritte’s lesser known works and covered his life in a lot of detail.
Magritte is one of my favourite artists and I’ve always enjoyed researching his work. His more famous paintings are not on display however, so do not go if you’re expecting to see what you’d expect.
The way around this museum seemed confusing but it made some sense to me. You go to the -2 floor upon entry to use the lockers and scan your tickets, then you travel up to the top floor and work your way down through the museum, following Magritte’s life chronologically. It didn’t seem too accessible since the lift was constantly in use to transport visitors from the bottom floor to the top, but with an ambulatory disability, I was able to get through this museum okay (just with some pain).
While I enjoyed Magritte’s works, there were features from artists inspired by Magritte which I did not enjoy. The paintings were contrived and distracted from the gallery in general. The artist Emily Mae Smith was currently on display at this museum, but I don’t feel as though it was entirely appropriate for the overall collection; it would make sense as a temporary exhibit at the end of the gallery to show how Magritte’s influence lives on, but dotted amongst these masterpieces, it was ultimately, a farce. It seemed to be more of a parody than homage, with stark contrasting colours surrounding anthropomorphic hotdogs with lip fillers… very odd. I didn’t care for it.
That aside, this museum is definitely worth it if you’re into Magritte’s work. There could be some improvements (particularly to the lighting and information provided on the paintings, such as the medium used), but it was definitely worth it just to see his work in person.Written January 24, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Yaron EHadera, Israel263 contributionsVery nice collection of contemporary art and the visit to Rene Magritte's house was very interesting. This should be coupled with the Museum of Fine Art which has a huge collection of his worksWritten October 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Marc DerveeuwOstend, Belgium406 contributionsAbsolutely stunning! The Van Buuren house in Ukkel is a hidden gem that beautifully showcases the elegance of Art Deco. The interior architecture is a unique total concept complemented by the impressive art collection. I was particularly captivated by the art collection and restored works of masters like contemporaries of Pieter Brueghel de Oude, the focus on the School of Latem with Gustave Van de Woestijne also Gustave Desmet, statues of Minne, unfinished work of Rik Wouters, a dark seaview of Permeke and a little Ensor. Standing next to Eric satie's piano I often felt like the owners were present, with each piece in the rooms telling its own story. A must-visit for art lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike!Written October 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Leo D6 contributionsVery rich museum in a beautiful setting, but limited explanations - in French and Dutch only! - Sophie S13 contributionsWe had a day in Brussels and decided to go to the atomium and mini europe- both great by the way- and noticed that with are tickets we got free entry to the design museum. It was two relatively big rooms with funky chairs. It was quite interesting but we where done in 10 minutes (especially as not much of it is in English) so glad we got it free. Definitely don't pay €10 for it!Written April 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

Beautiful collection of interesting pieces over three floors. They also have a roof terrace (though the view isn't that great) and a café.

He was a wonderful sculptor of everyday, working men, full of dynamism and energy, and this was one of our favourite places in Brussels. The entrance is very unassuming (the front door to his house) and you have to ring the bell to be let in but there are lots of his sculptures from small to larger than lifesize. - BradHong Kong, China180,618 contributionsThe Old Masters Mueum is one of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium located at Place Royal in the Upper Town of Brussels. The museum is presently open from 10am to 5pm (weekdays) and 11am to 6pm (weekends) but is closed on Mondays. Entrance fee is €10 which includes entrance to the Musee Fin-De-Siecle (End of the Century Museum). You can also purchase a €15 ticket combo that includes the Magritte Museum as well.
This museum is a trove of 15th to 18th-century Netherlandish artworks where you can view masterpieces by Rogier van der Weyden, Memling, Gerard David, Hieronymus Bosch and an entire room dedicated by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in what is the second largest collection of this Flemish Old Master in the world only behind the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna. You will also see works by Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jordaens, Tiepolo and others spread out over several floors, providing a couple hours of excellent artwork viewing.Written November 23, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Maison Cauchie is a designer house close to the boring EU neighborhood. In contrast to the slob of glass and steel nearby, this small house at least adds some character to the Belgian capital.Written June 14, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CD1510 contributionsThe temporary exhibits seemed nice although i did not pay the extra 3€ to enter. Otherwise all the other pieces were aesthetically presented and had good visuals to them, the only disappointing part of the museum was that a lot of the pieces were taken down for “scientific examination” or “on loan” although this was unfortunate it was still a very impressive museum and i spent 4 hours thereWritten July 10, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
