What travelers are saying
- M GArlington, VA93 contributionsThis is a small modern museum dedicated to, of course, Delftware pottery created by Royal Delft. It’s located a few blocks to the south of central Delft on Rotterdamseweg.
Rooms are focused on the history of the factory and samples of Delftware products and art. This didn’t just include tiles, but all manner of decorative goods. One large room showed how tiles were used for architectural decorations in years past, although this has now fallen out of style. Finally, one can walk through part of the factory floor to see items being created. There was also a separate exhibition space; when we visited this was dedicated to photographs featuring Delftware vases combined with floral displays.
Amenities included lockers and restrooms. There was (naturally) a huge giftshop with many items for purchase at different price levels. We also stopped at the small restaurant, where various sandwiches and snacks were available. The food was generally good, if service was typically leisurely.
Highly recommended for fans of art, local history, and Delftware pottery. The museum isn’t very large, so one could probably complete a visit in less than two hours.Written August 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This church is “new” as compared to the Oude Kerk, even though it still dates from the 13th century. The interior is brick red, and it houses the tombs of the members of the Netherland’s ruling family, the House of Orange. The highlight is the magnificent tomb of William the Silent, who died in 1584. Other members of the House of Orange are buried in the crypt beneath the floor, which is not open to the public. Legal minds might also appreciate the tomb of Hugo Grotius. A pathway leading around the central tomb of William the Silent includes videos describing Dutch history.
One may purchase a combined ticket for both the Old and New churches. The New Church also includes a really tall tower that one may ascend with a separate ticket. We did not attempt to climb the tower, although someone in the gift shop stated that the climb took at least 30 minutes. When we visited the church was busy, but it was not overly crowded. Amenities included restrooms and a gift shop. There were no issues with photography. Highly recommended for lovers of history and art and old churches. An hour or less is probably sufficient time to visit the church.Written August 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A former Catholic monastery, William the Silent, perhaps the key figure in the formation of The Netherlands, sought refuge there after the King of Spain called for his assassination. Eventually, an assassin did kill him, and the bullet holes can still be viewed on the wall of an interior staircase. But, apart from this very important historical fact, the museum covers not only the monastery itself but has excellent galleries on the Dutch independence movement, the life of William the Silent, his House of Orange contemporaries, and the city of Delft. The museum also has a large collection of Delftware and, at the time, a special exhibit on Vermeer and Delft (no works by Vermeer, though). However, I devoted the three hours of my visit to William the Silent, and I am glad I did.Written June 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LisamarchChatham, IL1,316 contributionsWe visited the day before going to The Hague where we saw Girl With a Pearl Earring. Great way to learn about Vermeer, including the history of art during his time, his use of light, his benefactor and financial history, and to see reproductions of his work. A couple interactive activities, too. Good gift shop. Lockers on ground floor.Written June 12, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - M GArlington, VA93 contributionsThe Oude Kerk is, naturally, an old church located in the center of Delft. We visited in April 2023. Parts of the church date from the 13th century, and at this time the interior is a brilliant painted white with beautiful stained glass windows. Displays spread throughout the interior describe aspects of the church’s architecture and history along with notable individuals from Delft. Numerous people are buried in the church, including Johannes Vermeer and Anthony van Leeuwenhoek, many with carved tombstones. When we visited there was also a separate display of paintings from a contemporary Dutch artist, Henk Helmantel, who paints modern still lifes.
As many others have noted, one may purchase a single ticket to enter both the Old and New churches in Delft. The church was busy when we visited, but there was plenty of space for people to spread around. Amenities included restrooms and a gift shop. There were no issues with taking photographs. Highly recommended for lovers of history and art and old churches. An hour or less is probably sufficient time to visit the church.Written August 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
