Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum)
#6 of 93 things to do in Utrecht
Plenty of beautifully restored steam and diesel, a miniature train ride for the kids, a brilliantly restored first NL train and the piece de resistance is The Crucible which is a virtual train trip which is a must...
It's well laid out and has many thinks to see/do for all the family including steam days; rides; attractions; a theatre (sort of pantomime style play); interactive tasks etc. Has some excellent cafes too!

Museum Speelklok

Yes this is a quirky museum, very different but equally well worth a visit for all ages as children would also love the moving features and the magnificent sounds these instruments can make, definitely worth a visit.
During school holidays, there are extra activities for the kids, we enjoyed a very well done show about Beauty and the beast (in Dutch) with extra blankets and cushions to keep it cosy :) While visiting we joined...

The highlight by far for our boy is the transport themed room with virtual driving, tricycles for kids to ride on the 'roads', zebra and railway crossings, ride on train and bus.

Me and my family rented some kayaks in the canal, and it was really amazing.

Guided tour was excellent, the walk up the tower is fairly steep, so be aware of that if travelling with elderly or children.

Museum is for people who like science and research, but it's also excellent for kids and adults who are still a kid inside.
It's very interactive and I think especially good for children - there are lots of educational videos (in English too).

You start off your visit at a cloakroom, where you can use (free) lockers to store jackets etc. From there, you flow through the museum, (2 levels), encountering various interactive rooms and displays for children...
There's lots of hands-on stuff for kids to touch and play with and, of course, the little Miffy fella is everywhere.
