Vindelpark has a great soundscape - concerts (too busy dancing to take photos), street musicians and birdsong. Great place to hang out with friends and family. I was with my brother and we had a great time. Enjoy a picnic or just stroll and soak up the atmosphere. Or sit and watch the world go by. It’s not a big park but it’s certainly one of the busiest and friendly parks I’ve been to as my brother and I had about four conversations with strangers!

Amazing zoo! They have so many animals and everything you would want to see/do. Lots of cafes and friendly staff if you need anything. Would definitely go again!

This is one of the widest waterways in the city and one that you can take a canal boat on, or walk along. It is not the most charming, but it is very practical as a way for transport. Several big bridges.

Be sure to buy an I Amsterdam Card. It is the best city card we ever bought. Be ready for drizzle. Take a canal ride with Those Dam Boat Guys. Venture out of the city, Netherlands has an excellent train network Visit the second tier museums. Remember to make dinner reservations, unless you are a very early eater, you will need them at most restaurants. It's hard to get lost but never-the-less get a good map. Always be vigilant of bikes and cars. They both travel fast on canal side streets.

Botanical gardens are always on my radar when I travel and this little one is a lovely green urban space! Great gardens and hothouses with tropical plants. There is also a shop and cafe on site and plants for sale. I lived my open sandwich and tea.

I cycle here most days. It is stunning. It spans from Amstelveen to central Amsterdam. It has forest, it has gardens, it has streams and rivers to swim in, it has a theatre, it has a horse manger, it has a goat farm, it has a boating course, it has climbing activities, it has cafes. However, in spite of so many things going on, it remains the most peaceful and tranquil place I know. I leave each time refreshed and rejuvinated ready for the day. I truly love my visits to Amsterdamse Bos.

One of the three major canals, Keizersgracht provides a glimpse into the history of the city, as you can see the buildings that used to be warehouses (look for the shutters and the hooks at the roofline that were used to haul things up). Lovely to walk or take a canal boat.

The location for this hotel from the train station was very close and very accessible to the city centre. The hotel was very clean and the staff were very helpful.
Unfortunately, as with a lot of city hotels the room was tiny and the shower/ toilet was really small.
The only plus side was that we were not in the hotel very much as we were out sight seeing and socialising for the entire trip. I would definitely stay in this hotel again despite the small rooms

This park is great! We visited Amsterdam with our 7 year old son, and we saw a lot of history and culture. It was good to go to Amstelpark on a warm day and do all the little kid things. We biked to and through the park. We splashed in the big wadding pool, rode the small train through the park, tried to go to the petting zoo but it closes at 3pm (but we still saw some animals), my son played in the playgrounds, and rode on the little rides. He was so happy. (I would say 7 or 8 years old would be the oldest ages that would really enjoy this. Ideal for 3-6 year olds).

The most beautiful, picturesque, peaceful canal. We took so many photos, beautiful buildings, such a romantic place. We visited in our second day, and we kept visiting everyday for the rest of our stay. It meets Prinsengracht canal, where you can find some amazing small cafes and restaurants. Highly recommended.

The location of our hotel (Arena) for our 4 night stay, this is a lovely green space, but with ponds which are visited by herons (spotted) and the like. Apart from the numerous pathways, there is a tennis court and boules pitch (free) and children's adventure playground. The park is also used for yoga and similar activities. It was a real bonus to us to find this lovely park on our doorstep.

We could not get tickets for the museum - book this early to avoid this. However, the gardens to the rear are free to peruse. There is a nice hedged area with planting. Perhaps they could do more with tulips but it was early season. There are large containers with beautiful single colours in. A water feature caught a few people out as it squirted from the ground upwards turning on and off. Cold water up your trouser leg would wake you up! Nice green space to wander away from the traffic.

Rembrandtpark is a great place to relax, especially on a warm day! Not as busy as most other parks in the city, so a great place to escape to!

Sarphatipark is a small urban park near the lively Albert Cuypmarkt. With a small pond and lush area, it is a nice place to escape the crowd while staying in the city. This is the perfect option for a respite.

Highlight of our trip to Amsterdam.

Rented bikes 5 mins from central station, hopped on the free 2 min ferry across to Amsterdam Noord & explored the cycle paths to the wetlands and beyond.

Best way to experience the more rustic side and be within nature. Vast areas of open land, canals, windmills and waterbirds. Bizarrely even highland cows (and we live in Scotland!)

Plotted our route to take in some local towns, and coastal areas too.

E-bikes made for an enjoyable day spent out in the fresh air, clocking up 60km with a leisurely stop for lunch & sightseeing when suited.

Highly recommend - even if you’re the only person in a helmet, do it!
