This is really a fantastic building, and a perfectly created set of exhibitions. It's all changing exhibitions, so you will learn something new every time you go.

Most amazing of all, it is free! Even if you are not a museum person, you should go in just to experience the incredible architecture. And you might find something you enjoy.

When we went there, they had one blockbuster show that was not free. It had great big audiences, I think, but it wasn't for us: an exhibition about the history of The Rolling Stones ($25 ticket.) People were coming to stay in Groningen just to see this show, so I'm sure it was worthwhile if you are a Rolling Stones fan. And the city itself is lively and full of arts experiences, so it's probably making the trip for the big deal show that you have to pay for.

But if you just want the city's history and design shows etc. it is also very worthwhile and could fill an entire day. The restaurant was very good, too.

Located right in the heart of activity where seemingly all cross paths seem to meet here in our week long walking travels, definitely take the time to make the 260 steps spiral brick staircase climb. There are a couple breakout areas on the way to see the bells etc before you make it to the viewing top wraparound area.

A clear day is of course best time for views. The rotating turnstile are unattended but you can easily pay ~8 Euros per person by credit card and the gate will allow one person in.

Note: While unattended their is an outer gate at the base that does get locked and prevents access to the final turnstile. Check the local times of operation and it seemed it might get closed on very windy / cloudy days.

I don't often leave reviews for attractions/events, but I make an exception in this case. I know the Dutch fascination with ships/boats is almost as popular as their fascination with bicycles and cheese. I am not usually one who is wooed with ships and originally I had no plans to visit this museum, despite being in Groningen for a full week. I am VERY glad that I made the time for this museum however. First, the buildings that it is housed in is very very interesting and quite historical just in itself. I would go here JUST for that. The museum does an excellent job at squeezing in a lot of stuff and information into a relatively smaller space (something that the Dutch are quite adept at). There is much to see here, which I wasn't expecting much due to the seemingly limited space of the museum itself. The museum did an excellent job at displaying maritime history and also at explaining Dutch history and culture. I think this museum is very underrated and unfortunately perhaps undervisited. I was the only person in the museum for about 2 hours. This museum is a wonderful little gem and it will be your misfortune if you skip it.

Groningen is an unknown gem in the Netherlands. A beautiful small city with wonderful architecture, beautiful canals and wonderful shops. A must see.

Small but certainly interesting museum in center of Groningen. Starting with modern day archaeology examples , but also in past collected items and tribute to first female Dutch physician and advocate for women’s vote rights. Interesting collection of anatomy related samples ( Enschede collection).

NonFiction is passionate about providing a platform for people's stories, photography and education. It is a place where art and critical awareness about urgent social issues meet and intertwine. Everyone from different backgrounds and interests can develop their skills here and dive into the . world of photojournalism. The best spot for hands-on creative expression!

We had a special, from chef Pelle. With a lot of love he prepared a 1150grams tomahawk-steak for the 3 of us. The steak was delicious! The steak is not on the menu, but just ask the chef (2 day notice)!

In every Netherlandish city, it is worthwhile keeping an eye out for the hofjes that you can walk into. The gezellig gardens and little apartments will give you the desire to move in right away. But it's fun to just look, too.

This was one of the lovely ones: I couldn't resist taking lots of pictures.

Love this little park, a real local hotspot in the summer. Pack a picnic and a blanket and pick a spot on one of the sprawling lawns. Can get really busy and a bit rowdy in the evenings when it's hot! Please always take your trash with you.
