Very impressive and interesting building, extremely innovative in 1920, because of the solidity of the pumping system and the effectiviness on the impact on watermanagement in the Province Friesland. We were also impressed by the building itself, with some Amsterdamse School elements.
A well-informed volunteer leads you through the building and makes you understand the importance of this building. Very attractive “ bezoekerscentrum”, not too big, showing how inhabitants of Friesland deal with living under the sealevel.

The town planners have created a large open square in front of the Old Tower which makes it easy to see how much it leans. One can visit inside and climb to the top. The square is on the edge of Leeuwarden and is a short walk to other attractions.

Whilst climbing to the top of this lighthouse unsurprisingly gives you the very best views of Ameland, this is to be expected; But the other place on Ameland that gives you almost as good of views and you don't have to do much climbing are the sand dunes just west of the lighthouse and of the Bunker Museum. There are nature trails there. If you walk nearly to the west coast from the lighthouse/Bunker Museum, you can climb some sand dunes and you get a lovely view of the western beaches of Ameland, of Terschelling (the next island over), and of the mainland.

We visited this museum of the local painter Jopie Huisman and enjoyed his art and the stories around it.

Pleasantly surprised by seeing this piece of art as soon as I left the station. I didn't know it was there.

It was lovely to see the big wooden wheels and the wings of the mill in action and to be able to actually whatch the whole process of corn turning into flour. The staff was lovely as well and always eager to say a couple of words about the procedure, the history of the Place of the product. However the entry fee is rather expensive. You basically walk yourself through the mill by yourself which can be a struggle on production days because it gets crowded really fast. Because of that you can fail to see some of the steps shown to you. At the bottom of the mill is a store where you can buy the flour, some local baking mixtures and a variety of mustards which are all produced in the mill. I especially recommend to try some of the mustard. I really liked the one with cranberries.
PS.: the „stairs“ are small, steep ladders and can be difficult to get up and down.

Completed in 1617, the late Renaissance style city hall of Bolsward is still the most eyecatching building in the center. Rather exuberant are the many decorations and variations with columns in the facade. The impressive portal with steps was added later (mid 18th century). Considering the city of Bolsward has just over 10,000 inhabitants it is perhaps a bit out of proportion. However, because of its festive appearance, enjoyable.

It is a small graveyard built for people lost at sea and washed ahsore. Many of those buried here died during WWII. It is sombering how young they were. And how our politicians still go around send young men en women to useless wars of greed.

Free entrance, no queues, no shop, no coffee, no tea, no lunches, no car park, no warders. There are videos and text displays to explain why this is a museum. I will not tell you, find out yourself. Open every day between 10.00-18.00.

We have taken the ‘Beach-bus’ (Vliehors express) to the Drenkelingenhuisje (shipwreck house). Which is a great experience. It is a desolate and empty space at the island of Vlieland.

Going by bus is already great, though then you inevitably are there with a bunch of other people.
Therefore I can imagine it is even greater when you go there on your own, walking to this place at almost the West-end of the island.
Obviously this is quite a stroll of about 6 kilometre - one way, measured from the most westward end of the paved cycling paths.

The red lighthouse is one of Vlieland‘s landmarks and located at a pittoreque location, on a hill, with nice views of the (wadden)sea and the village. Its nice to see it from nearby at least once when visiting Vlieland.

The gallery sells artsy stuff as well as memorabilia of Schiermonnikoog. My sister-in-law got a framed map of the island with walking tours. Folks are very friendly and the artwork if pretty cool. Worth a visit!
