Having grown up in the golden age of Channel 4's Football Italia coverage of Serie A, it was hard not to have a soft spot for Fiorentina. The purple strip, always made by companies like Lotto and Fila that seemed so exotic, the sponsors (7up, and Ice Cream Company then Nintendo) and players like Gabriel Batistuta and Rui Costa...no matter what side you chose as your favourite, nobody could ever truly dislike Fiorentina.

As such, when touring Italian football grounds, their home, the Stadio Artemio Franchi, became one of my 'must-see' spots. Over the years I've actually now visited it a few times and have a pretty good gauge on the matchday experience there.

Located a little out of the city centre, about ta 30 minute walk from the main train station (there is actually one of the smaller Florence stations right next to it but I've never sussed to how to use that to my advantage) the Artemio Franchi is, as with most Italian stadia, council owned and rented by the club. Holding around 44,000 spectators it also stands as one of the more modestly sized ones.

Being one of Italy's few one-team-cities, this can mean that securing a ticket can be slightly trickier than in many of the country's contemporary tourist favourites. Bafflingly the Fiorentina club shop in the city centre doesn't actually sell tickets, nor does the one located near the stadium. Indeed the only place I have found that sells tickets is in a small building almost reminiscent of a social club frequented by supporters that has a small ticket office. Located at pretty much the opposite end of the stadium from the city, Fiorentina like to make you walk! Please note that as with any ground in Italy, you will require ID to prove your name along the lines of a Passport.

In the lead-up to the stadium there are a healthy selection of stalls selling a combination of food and drink and also merchandise, some official, some non. This is one thing I like about the majority of Italian stadiums, makes it feel very old school.

Once in the ground, first built in the 30s, last subject to renovation for the 1990 World Cup, I'll be honest I never really took any stock of the catering options, but I imagine they'll be the the standard Italian options of rolls, nuts, soft drinks and beers.

The actual stadium itself is actually relatively well maintained for its age, albeit you do have to accept that it is old fashioned. One thing it does have going for it, which is somewhat uncommon in Italy, is a lack of a running track, meaning you are a lot closer to the action. also rather unusual is the complete lack of any cover on any of the stands. At first glance this may not sound that huge an issue in a sunny country, but I can assure you that it does rain in Tuscany, and it can also pour. This aside, it also presents another issue in that when it is, as you'd expect from Florence, gloriously sunny...that sun is beating down on you for 90 minutes. I've picked up some cracking sunburn in this stadium.

While the slightly smaller capacity and the trickiness to get tickets sometimes can seem like a negative, it isn't actually without its silver lining. I mean this as should you manage to get a ticket, there is significantly less chance of being faced with a hollow atmosphere in a cavernous, too big for purpose stadium as you may find at the San Siro or the Olimpico. The fact Fiorentina have a passionate support, mainly housed in their Curva Nord ensure that there is rarely a dull day at the Artemi Franchi regardless of the game in question.

As mentioned above, being a council owned stadium sadly there is nothing to see relating to la Viola on non-matchdays besides the aforementioned store, which to be honest stocks identical merchandise to the city centre one.

With this said, if in town when the home team are playing, I'd definitely recommend a trip to the Artemio Franchi providing you go with the right set of expectations: This isn't a massive, modern super-stadium, and as such don't expect one. Instead soak up some real atmosphere in a classic stadium.

I actually feel like I'm being harsh only giving this 3 out of 5. I've thoroughly enjoyed every game I've been to here, and thoroughly recommend it to any football fans visiting this lovely city, but I am rating the actual stadium itself at heart, and the exposure to the elements means it isn't one of the most ideal unless the weather sits right.

I still love those purple shirts though. Batigol's hair too.

I saw Ennio Morricone at this venue, very well organised and lots of staff to help. I was amazed at how close I was to the stage, I was at the back in the stalls. The atmosphere was amazing the acoustics and lighting just added to the whole experience. Got a bus from St Marco's square number 17, 21 and walked the rest 10 minute walk. There were no buses after the event so booking a taxi would be advisable if staying in Central Florence

Done lots of escape rooms and the first was so good we did both. Very challenging, but not "stupid confusing" like where you have to make totally not obvious leaps. All the clues were super clear once you figured them out. Probably one of the best put together escape rooms I've done in awhile!

Firstly it’s worth noting we did this in Italian, and I’m not sure it can be done in English, but if you have someone Italian with you who can translate it should be ok for you.

We found it very good, and very scary! Really liked the effort and detail put into the rooms. Was incredibly complex which is fun (not too easy) but they include red herrings to throw you off which can waste a lot of time and you can’t really know if it’s supposed to be solved or not, which was a little annoying but didn’t ruin the experience.

The staff were super friendly very scary, and made things really fun for us!

    Thanks for having us :)

I had to check this place out. It was pretty dingy with maybe 10-15 slot machines. You have to buzz outside to be let in. It's a tiny place right across the train station. A few slots in the front and some more in the back smoking room. If you want to do slots while in Florence then I guess check it out but don't expect anything nice!

I visited my friends studying in Florence and I had never been, so we tried this tour out and it was super fun. I wanted to be able to see the important parts of the city while also being able to catch up with everyone. It worked out really well because of all the different stops during the scavenger hunt. Great way to explore Florence with friends.

What an incredible week! I really can’t thank Laura enough. She taught me so much in such a compressed timeframe and with such passion, enthusiasm and insight. Laura answered all the questions I could have asked before I needed to ask them. She helped me spot when something wasn’t quite right - not only did her hawk eyes catch where I’d gone wrong, she could explain to me why I’d made the mistakes I had, and the skewed logic that one can recognise and correct only with years of experience.

Although I had just 6 three-hour sessions across the week, what I learned was invaluable. It was so fulfilling and joyful to paint again after such a long time. Laura is such a wonderful teacher!

I hope to have the opportunity to return to the studio for another course/project in the not too distant future.
