Quite a hike from Florence centre but there's regular public transport. The cemetery itself is interesting but the views from around it and below are stunning and well worth the effort of getting here.

We arrived in Florence late on a Friday afternoon and since this cemetery is not open on weekends, we quickly checked into our hotel and then walked for 25 minutes or so to see the Protestant cemetery where Elizabeth Barrett Browning is interred. The cemetery is situated on a hill, so it is elevated above street level and is in Piazzale Donatello surrounded by busy streets (be careful crossing the streets!). As it was late in the season, the cemetery was dusty and dry, with some beautiful Italian cypress trees here and there. We just walked in and up the main path so pretty quickly found signage next to Elizabeth Barrett Browning's grave. Most of the cemetery's residents came from England so I really did not recognize names and unfortunately I wasn't able to locate the graves of two Americans on my list. It was a little difficult to walk up and down aisles looking, but there was some beautiful scenery to enjoy with unusual monuments and the trees. Watch your step walking as there are some uneven areas.

Went to the cemetery specifically to visit the grave of Oriana Fallaci: the cemetery is located in a very beautiful area of Florence and it is decently maintained.
I had to seek help to locate the grave and the florist was very nice and helpful.
It was overall a very positive experience.

If you’re family are buried here, search for Florence War Cemetery on Facebook so you can meet others with family.

Today I visited and couldn’t thank the staff enough for what they did for me. My Grandfather lost his dad at the age of 2. 10 years ago my Grandfather was killed without ever getting the chance to visit. Today the staff dig a little hole in top of his fathers grave so I could lay some of his ashes. As doing so, they said a little prayer. They will forever have my respect. This meant so much to the family and especially to me as I was the 4th generation and first to ever visit. Please go there and enjoy the peace and quiet. The reason that today we live in peace and can share life with those that once were possibly enemies.
