I stumbled across this charming palazzo whilst exploring Palermo on a solo trip. Giovanni, the owner personally showed me around his house which has been so well kept. He made such an effort to speak in English and it was wonderful to see the portraits of his ancestors and to take a walk around his wonderful home. Well worth the €10 for this hidden gem!

In a tour guidebook I read during the planning of the trip to Sicily, it was written that the Palermo’s "New Gate" was built in 1569 in memory of King Carl V's visit to Palermo in 1535. Another guide states that the gate was built in 1460 and served for a long time as the main land access to the city. In 1667 the gate was almost completely destroyed when lightning struck fire dust warehouses that were near the gate causing a huge explosion. Regardless of the exact information of the two, for me the gate is beautiful with all the sculptures and especially the eagle’s head, which is made of Miolica tiles, on the roof.

This is apparently the only 360 degrees view of the city. The tour was part of the church built in XIII century. There are three floors ( the panoramic view being on the third one). The steps are tiny and steep so it might be difficult for people who are not fit or who are elderly. I went there for a night visit which was nice but I think it's better to see it during daylight. I'll go back. The entrance fee is 4€ and there is a guide included who will explain what you're seeing. It is definitely a place to visit in Palermo. Make sure you check their opening hours cause I think they open only on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

We rode past this monument en route to our hotel from the airport and as my boyfriend wanted to see it, we made the walk to the area - which is well away from the city centre! The monument is beautiful and very striking, but I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see it... You can see it just as well from your taxi or bus, as you would on foot!

This is a truly magnificent painting, it draws the viewer in, you just can't take your eyes off her, she is so beautiful and simply mesmerising.
It is housed in the Regional Gallery Palazzo Abatellis, the work is 15th Century by Antonello de Messina. I haven't seen any other of his works, but this surely must be his masterpiece.
    Not to be missed.

It is located in the harbor area, but it is easy to miss.

As others have written, it does stand bold and stark against its surroundings.

Unfortunately, the area it is in has become quite rundown.

Go at night, I walked this street twice. During the day it is dead, but at night it lights up with so many fun people. Lost of taverns and cheap drink places. One of the liveliest places at night and lots of street food around here to boot.

The towering column takes central position in the Piazza San Domenico and stands in front of the St Dominic’s church. Altogether, the column, the Baroque church and the piazza with its palm trees is a picturesque stopping point.

It is in the historic centre of Palermo, right near one of the entrances to the Vucciria markets so it is very easy to combine a visit to the two things.

The column was erected in 1728. Marian columns, with the Virgin Mary at the top, were not uncommon and were especially popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were a very visible feature of Baroque architecture.

Visibility was the key. By putting Mary with her halo of stars, at the very top of the 25m high grey marble column, she could be seen from greater distances across the city.
Lower down on the column are 4 marble statues of the archangels Michele, Gabriele, Raffaele and Uriele and 2 bronze statues of Pope Pius IX and Pope Pius XII.

Sculpted by Benedetto De Lisi, the memorial is located in Piazza Ruggero Settimo in front of the Teatro Politieama and was inaugurated in 1865. It is a life-sized statue mounted on a marble pedestal which is surrounded by a low decorative fence. He is depicted in a relaxed stance wearing an overcoat and ascot. His left hand is behind his back and the right is tucked into his overcoat at chest level. He was a counter-admiral, diplomat, politician and political activist, and became President of the Italian Senate from 1861 until May 12 1863 when he died.

Garibaldi was obviously important to the Italians as he was instrumental in unifying the Italian State. This is Garibaldi on a horse, seeming to point at something - not sure what! He declared Sicily for King Vit Emanuel around this spot, I believe.
