The city square where everyone gathers for gelato and stroll. The church is very interesting and the surrounding area inspiring. Make sure to check out the elephant statue

Completed in 1763, this one storey Baroque palace is overlooking the marina. The Biscari family clearly liked to show its wealth and assigned several artists to decorate the building. Inside the ceilings and walls reveal colourful frescoes. Sculpture work adorns the windows and portal.

Visiting hours are not always clear as the palace halls are for rent. Often there are wedding parties, ceremonies or fairs. Ask the guard at the entrance about when visits are possible.

Despite charging for entrance tickets there seems to be little effort to offer much information to tourists.
Interesting if you are in Catania, but bear in mind Catania is not worth more than day’s visit, it’s the dirtiest place we have ever seen!

This huge church is imposing but too simple outside. Construction was started in 1687, but it has never finished. It’s a part of the grandiose complex of the Benedictine Monastery. Inside is nicer and it has a great organ.

Sant'Agata alla Fornace church is a very important place for the people of Catania. The tradition says that here is the place where Saint Agatha, the patron of the city, was tortured. This and many other interesting facts and legends can be learn during the guided tour. It costs only one euro per person and you have the opportunity to learn from passionate young guides like Luca a lot about the saint, about the church and about Catania.

Near via Etna, in Piazza Stesicoro, a small remaining of an ancient amphiteatro (underground), visiable from the corner. For a quick look, if you are around.

We were a large group of guests. Environment is extraordinary. You are inside of V-VI century Bizantine church which has great walls made of stone. Service and food is delicious. Strongly recommended!

Walking up from Via Etnea through the equally pedestrianized Via Penninello and then up some steps one comes to the well known Via dei Crociferi. Immediately to the right and at the northern end of the street of the cross-bearers is a baroque gate, through which one enters into a lovely court, with the Villa Cerami to the left, now part of the faculty of jurisprudence of the university of Catania.

The Villa Cerami in 18th century baroque style was the local residence of the noble family of the Rosso, Princes of Cerami and as the family tradition goes of originally Norman descent.

An interesting rectangular square in Catania center. The ruins of the Roman amfitheater, 18th century Baroque palazzi and modern Corso Sicilia are, as it were, meeting here. All overseen by Sicily's greatest composer Bellini sitting high on his pedestal.

Moreover, there often are markets at the square where ordinary citizens meet up. The past and the present brought together.

Quiet little square with the theatre, a fountain and a couple of bars
We enjoyed sitting there, having a beer and watching the world go by for an hour in the shade (compared to the hubbub and heat of the adjacent Piazza Duomo)

The pink house is stuck on the corner of quite a tired neighbourhood in Catania (let’s face it most of Catania looks tired)
We walked past it on the way up to the museum commemorating the allied invasion in 1943
Worth stopping and taking a pic but don’t go out of your way

Convitto Nazionale Mario Cutelli is a historical national boarding school locates near the cruise pier in Catania. The typical Baroque architectural style building standing on the small square with a nice statue at the fountain in front is one of the tourist spot.

Since 1867, the central railway station at the seaside is connecting Catania to Messina and Rome on the Italian mainland. Trains also run to Palermo and Syracuse. There is a busstation offering links into the region and airport.

The neoclassical style building has been adjusted to modern times. There are basic facilities like toilets, an information counter and kiosk.

The location is 1.4 km northeast of piazza del Duomo.
