#1 of 22 Sights & Landmarks in Monte Sant'Angelo
This shrine is located close to the Castle of Monte Sant'Angelo (worth a quick visit) and other sites in the historic center of this town, including some great panoramic views of the sea afar.
Very old and fascinating building well worth a visit and only a short walk past all the curio shops in this old town from the Palace Hotel

... me; the crypt is welcoming and inviting to prayer - however, if you are there only for the tourism, you can still have a wonderful experience thanks to the lovely elegant Romanesque architecture and decorations.
This is a Catholic church run by Dominican priests, but its most visited section, the crypt with the tomb of Saint Nicholas of Myra (yes, THE Santa Claus!), has many Byzantine Orthodox elements, including a small...

... during our stay in Lecce/Otranto - and we saw a LOT of churches - this is well worth a visit just for the floor, but do visit the crypt (which is free) it has a Moorish feel of architecture style and is peaceful.
There’s so many in Italy it’s easy to get numb, but this has mosaic floors from the 12th century and great additions from every architectural period since.

What we did see was a glorious example of Romanesque architecture which, from a personal point of view comes as such a welcome relief from the full blown Baroque which is the norm in Puglia.

Nice to visit such a lovely place and not have to pay to enter a place of worship.

One of my favorite places was here " Basilica di Santa Croce (Lecce)" There was beautiful and full of history sine 16th and 17th centuries.
... will like .Personal tastes apart, you have to admire the sheer artistry and skill of all aspects of both interior and exterior with the detail on the carvings showing in sharp relief due to the recent cleaning.

Inside it is of a single nave design with the high alter featuring numerous columns with small statues of saints between the columns, In a central niche is a 1691 wooden sculpture of St. Matthew.
The high altar in an apse with effusive columns and statues of saints either side of a statue of St Matthew the Apostle in the central niche.

A medieval church sitting on top of a monolithic rock and overlooking the Sassi, this church offers multiple, moderately well-preserved (and restored) frescoes inside.
Our hotel overlooked this pretty church, set on a little hill that rises from Sasso Caveoso, this church is on many famous pictures of the Sassi of Matera.

This is a Lecce baroque masterpiece, beautiful facade with a majestic high altar and six side chapels.
The compactness though gives one a central view of 16-17th century ecclesiastical decoration, the big names don’t match.

The church of St Irene is actually simpler and thus more beautiful inside than many of the others in Lecce which are so overwhelming that eventually you have had enough of Baroque.
Another nice church and not far from Duomo.

I was fascinated by the pulpit as well.
Inside it’s rather more subdued with an interesting skeleton- painted pulpit.

A really nice archeological religious site; many ruins but an interesting imposing stone head enthroned out, very impressive; perhaps it's a burial site; around a nice view to olive trees.
