What travelers are saying
- ginsengNewYorknew york1,168 contributionsVenice is delightful at all times. Yes, Carnival is a lot of fun, especially if you bring your own costume, and if you reserve your lodgings ahead of time.
You can be as elegant and extravagant, or as simple and funny as you wish ! But make sure you have warm underwear as it can be cold some days.
Venice is however much more than the touristic postcard sold worldwide.
It is an amazing symbol of resilience.
A place born in the middle of marshes where people escaped from the barbarians.
A place made of 100 and plus tiny islands that thrived and became a powerful city-state.
An exquisitally beautiful place that literally floats between water and sky.Â
A trompe l'oeil place par excellence, where huge, somptuous, heavy churches and palaces are actually much lighter than one could think, as they are built in bricks and covered with marble.
An amazing architectural town, with ingenious handling of natural challengesÂ
A place of human scale, totally devoid of cars, mopeds or bikes, which translates into serenity and absolutely no noise pollution! Â
The Serenissima is indeed serene : you can hear birds singing, kids laughing, breeze whispering in the trees!Â
Yes, a few areas are very touristic and crowded, but there are many others that are quietly unknown and delightful!Written March 6, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands3,128 contributionsThis year 2021 the 'regata storica' in Venice was on September 5 (first Sunday in September). Despite covid restrictions it was again quite a spectacle with contributions from different communities in the city. The historical parade through the Grand Canal of course is the major event with the Doge and the Duchess in traditional costumes in a colorful beautifully decorated boat flanked by many others. Then there were the more competitive gondola races. It looks so easy to row while standing, though I know from experience how hard it really is.
It was hard to find a good spot to view the ongoings. Be there early. The program starts at 4PM, but at noon the best spots were already taken.
For me the highlight was Fellini's Rhinocerontess (an image of a great golden rino on one of the boats).Written October 11, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - AUSNCBrisbane, Australia175 contributionsThe 2018 Biennale was definitely a very interesting experience. The theme was free space which was dealt with very thoughtfully by some pavilions and not as successfully by some others. Highlights included the German and Italian pavilions, with the British blank walls at the other end of the scale.Written September 29, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
