- marriott946London, UK334 contributionsLovely lake, quite large, cleanest apparently in Italy.
Hire a boat, visit the Little Island.
Towns dotted around.
Sail, row, canoe, swim, endless opportunities.Written April 27, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Patpet58Rivoli, Italy1,952 contributionsA timeless pleasure, a precious time, every time.
A picturesque footpath, a beautiful church with great wall frescoes, a magical atmosphere.Written October 18, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - intrepid100Scotlandscotland83 contributionsI visited in mid February in the morning. A stunning view from the mountain top and all the chapels providing wonderful information about the life of St Francis with charming, life size wooden sculptures. There was a parking place 100 metres from the church where you can park for free for 2 hours. But in tourist season, I hear from friends the place is a nightmare and your only option is to walk up the hill.Written February 24, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- paolovbossiThe Hague, The Netherlands708 contributionsOrta is very little and this is the heart of the small town. It is a little jewel with the only bad spot of a old hotel closed and not refurbished. For the rest is just lovely, with the bars, the palace of Broletto and the fantastic view on the lake with S.Giulio island.Written September 9, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Ken WJeffersonton, VA13 contributionsThis Romanesque basilica (Basilica di San Giuio) was constructed and reconstructed over centuries on San Giulio Island ( Isola di San Giulio), located in Lake Orta in northwestern Italy. This small island is a jewel not often seen by tourists. The basilica is the most famous building on the island, but don't miss the nearby Benedictine monastery. Your trip should include a walk around this picturesque island, Boats to the island leave regularly from Orta, the lake's namesake village. While in Orta, be sure to visit the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its 21 chapels dedicated to St. Francis.Written February 10, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- B LHastings, UK84 contributionsJust call in here and sit for a while, enjoy the lapping water and watch the boats coming and going. Look at the lovely gardens, soak up the atmosphere of calm and maybe look at the "painting" on the easel of the resident artist.Written June 4, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Janneke1980Rotterdam, The Netherlands47 contributionsWe tried to go on Sunday, but it was full with Italian day tourists. The next day we had a great day. The restaurant is nice, the beds are good and the children enjoyed the slide in the water. The parents enjoyed the Aperol Spritz and gin tonic ;-) A great day out for the whole family.Written June 13, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- SabreSailorNew York421 contributionsThis is a lovely church on the way down from the top of the mountain. Or a bit up the mountain from the middle of town! Worth a visit.Written October 22, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- nnmercmanCamberley, UK13,101 contributionsThe space underneath this raised hall is often used by artists and also holds exhibitions - on the day we visited there was a large book sale. The architecture reminded me of a similar building in Poundbury near Dorchester which was modelled on an original structure. The surrounding square throngs with tourists, cafes and ice cream parlours plus there's a great view over the lake towards the island of San Giulio and town of Pella on the far side. The island ferry shuttle and lake service depart from the jetties.Written August 1, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- mpiz1 contributionDavide was always on time and flexible with changes. Email and in person communication was easy and stress-free. He was courteous and very personable. An excellent driver who knows the area very well. Out entire 3-day tour was a complete delight.Written May 7, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- nnmercmanCamberley, UK13,101 contributionsThere are two ways to visit the island - either by the infrequent lake ferry service or by one of the private boats which operate a shuttle service (or of course your own boat!). You board whichever boat is filling up and the 4e50c return ticket is valid on any of the private services for the return journey (not the lake ferry). The boats run frequently to and from the island and you'll probably only have to wait a maximum of 5mins either way in the summer months. The journey only takes just over 5 mins (longer outward as they take an anti clockwise circuit). Boats are clean and staff friendly - although the island's very small (with I think only one restaurant), the church is definitely worth a visit.Written July 31, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
