Amazing square, which in December was not too busy except on Sat & Sun nights. Lots to see around here and plenty of locals as well as tourists. Amazingly historic buildings and institutions in this area. One could easily spend a week just in this square and surrounding streets and wish they had stayed for longer.

We had the Fan Experience package which include the simulator, pit crew, and private museum tour. It is a large and very busy place. The team members were great, though getting us from activity to activity. We were there about 1 hour 45 minutes and were quite busy. I’d ally at least 2 hours, assuming you have reservations.

We took the red train from Piazza Maggiore (13 euros per person). We enjoyed the journey up the hill top. We saw many people walk up the many steep steps. the church is beautiful. The garden outside is large and cute too.

Quite simply, a staggering sight. Don't miss these towers, even though they are currently undergoing work, with hoardings around the bases. Really spectacular.

Part of a complex of seven religious buildings, the Basilica (one of several basilicas in Padua) dates to the eight century. Wonderfully serene, the church is of Lombard origin, with a single nave and a trussed vault.

Highlights in the art program include the beautiful main altar Crucifix by Simone dei Crosifissi. There is a rare 12th century fresco in Romanesque style attributed to Berlinghiero, joined by fifteenth century frescoes by Michel de Matteo. In the Chapel of the Trinity, there is an equally rare, quite beautiful wooden group of the Adoration of the Magi, sculpted in the 14th century, the oldest Nativity scene known in the world.

There are so many mosaics in this church that it is advisable to either have a book or guide to explain their meaning to you. We got so much more from our visit since our guide was able to talk about the meaning behind most of what we saw.

The Basilica is a huge building; the main portal by Della Quercia is a sculptural masterpiece decorated with both panels and standing sculptures depicting prophets, saints, and scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The interior, with three aisles, is wonderfully decorated with a variety of different media: altarpieces by Lorenzo Costa, frescoes by Giovanni da Modena (including the large Last Judgement) and Michele de Matteo, stained glass window designs also be de Matteo, wooden intarsia panels by Agostino di Marchi, a tempera and gold polyptych by Garelli, and a collection of panel paintings.

I am pleasantly surprised. Though this would be cheesy but the person or team that created this did extraordinary work. I enjoyed this. Would recommend!

If you love Ferrari then this is a must. Easy accessible by car with ample free parking. Once you enter this museum you can feel the presence of Enzo himself. The cars in show are to be admired in all their beauty. The video projected into the walls of the museum you could watch over and over again. Forza Ferrari

This was one of the most enjoyable small museums I've been to. It is steeped in history and it was very easy to imagine professors dissecting bodies with students crowded round and blood seeping into the wood and along the floor and the smell of flesh. The wood carvings are absolutely wonderful. All in all, a very evocative experience.

This is in the centre of Ferrara and still retains its moat and its 16th century appearance. It is actually a huge castle/palace that was the seat for the Dukes of Ferrara for two hundred years and was then the seat of the Papal Legate for another three hundred. We crossed the drawbridge and paid the €10 entrance although I got the 48 hour museum pass for €20 which gave me access to 10 city museums.

The first thing we noticed in the castle was the magnificent painted ceilings, not in every room but quite a few. They varied in style from frescoes to whatever you call painting inside a wooden framework of ceiling beams. The dungeons were impressive too, definitely a style I would bring back in for repeat or serious offenders! We climbed the stairs and saw the wonderful citrus garden on the terrace, designed by Eleanor of Aragon to remind her of Naples. This had great views over the moat but I messed those photos up.

Deb then sat and chilled whilst I climbed the Lion's Tower. I don't think I have ever hated vertigo more as it is such a stupidly irrational think but just so powerful. The steps were like metal fire escape stairs so you could see through them, all the way down, as you climbed and they creaked away. I think there were 6 levels to the tower and the only exit was at the top so I dread to think what my heart rate was by the time I got there. The views were obviously good but I couldn't take advantage of them as I didn't want to get anywhere near the edge. My brain knew the castle had stood 700 years so it was all fine but it was also telling me that it had been damaged be earthquakes, fires and allied bombing in WW2 so was basically an accident waiting to happen.

I went back down the stairs on very rubbery legs and finally reached the next part of the tour. Luckily no one else was on the stairs when I went up or down. We saw more amazing ceilings and read more information - the displays in the castle all had English versions and told of the architecture of the city, draining the nearby swamps to reclaim the land, town planning, the history of the Dukes, the artists involved in beautifying the castle, the earthquakes etc, a really fabulously informative selection.

This mausoleum opens at noon, and our group had a reservation to visit at that time so we were the only ones inside. The mosaics are a bit dark but are still spectacular. Since there wasn’t much explanation inside about the building, it was helpful to have a guide to share that information with us.
