What travelers are saying
- Mairwen1United Kingdom8,258 contributionsThis is well and truly off the beaten track for most tourists but it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Marche area.
I’ve seen other caves before but these are really quite stunning. It was so much more impressive than I’d expected.
It should be noted that you can really only get to the caves easily by car (40 min from Ancona). Once there, you leave the car in the large carpark and a free shuttle bus takes you to the caves’ entrance.
Also, the caves can only be visited with a tour guide.
In hindsight, we should have planned ahead and booked online. We bought tickets on arrival which meant we had to wait in the queue and missed at least one shuttle bus. We also missed the English speaking tour and had to join a tour in Italian.
We obviously missed out on a lot of information and all of his anecdotes but the caves are so truly spectacular that overall, it didn’t matter. Instead we bought a small caves book from one of the stalls near the ticket booth which served us well.
The paths throughout the caves were good, solid, elevated walkways which were mostly level and had good handrails. Theatrical lighting along the way enhanced the cave features.
At no time did anything feel scary or precarious. The areas are so large that there’s no creeping or crawling through narrow or small spaces like in some other caves. There are some steps but even the smaller kids on the tour managed these easily. The tour lasted about an hour and a half.
One odd thing happened. At the start of the tour, we were told ‘no photos’ in the caves. In fact some people in the group were told off for taking a sneaky shot. However halfway through the tour, we were suddenly allowed to take photos. I’m not sure why this was and I suspect it was to make sure that we all kept up a reasonable pace so that the tour behind us didn’t get held up. In any case if you get told no photos initially, don’t worry because you’ll have lots of opportunities later on and you’ll be able to take photos of the early parts of the cave on way back out.
Amazingly, these 190 million years old caves were only discovered in 1971. Since then, over 13km of cave passages, forming a large underground web, have been uncovered. It’s thought that there’s probably another 20+ kilometres still to be uncovered (you only see 1.5km on the tour).
It was hard to pick a highlight but if I did, it was probably the Hall of Candles, an underground, frozen lake with long thin candle-like stalagmites. It was just so beautiful.Written February 1, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The visit to the palace is over two floors, there is a lift if required. The highlight for me was viewing the fantastic painting by Piero della Francesca the "Flagelation" this was in separate rooms solely for paintings.Written September 14, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Paul D72 contributionsA small well presented castle in a walled town. Plenty of history but sadly some of the mural art was painted over in the 1920's. Fabulous views from the walls around the town. Pick a clear day to visit.Written September 25, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AharrisLondon, UK84 contributionsAmazing church in the centre of which is the Holy house of the Holy Family. Very moving to enter this place. The whole basilica is beautiful and has several different architectural styles. It's worth really spending some time here to see every side chapel. There is a friar and or priest who hands out blessed oil and water. Confession in different languages is available outside the main church along the wall you will see many small chapels. The Mass in Sunday is a Novus Order in Italian, not very reverently done when I attended, but this is quite common. I've been here twice now and it really is beautiful and worth the visit.Written October 19, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GranZorroZug, Switzerland1,425 contributionsA long boulevard flanked by palm trees with the Adriatic Sea and the beaches on one side, and hotels and residences on the other. Plenty of restaurants on the side leading to the beach. - David SMiddlesbrough, UK1,611 contributionsThis is definitely a must do in when in Ancona. The cathedral is very ornate and atmospheric. My wife and I had a short stop off in Ancona whilst on a TUI cruiser and we really enjoyed the visit to this beautiful building and its nearby stunning Bell Tower. It's a trek up lots of steps to get to but believe me the views alone are well worth the effort.Written October 5, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - rinamkFort Worth, TX15 contributionsA beautiful show and a must see for anyone in the area. Massimo is incredibly knowledgeable and conveys his passion for these birds to the audience. The technical details of their flight and prey locating techniques are fascinating. Public education and support for veterinary education is their legacy. Dorella and Massimo have their birds flying above you're heads with wings brushing your hair. It's exciting and a one of a kind show. Great for all ages.Written August 21, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- trooper92St. Gallen553 contributionsWe were lucky to have stopped here for a fe hours when traveling along the Adriatic coast. The village is nicely preserved, with wonderful views and a great historic atmosphere. Plan at least an hour to explore the alleys and viewpoints (including the castle‘s ruins).Written October 19, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mairwen1United Kingdom8,258 contributionsThe Riviera del Conero is off the beaten track for most tourists but for those who have the interest and time to explore the more remote natural areas, this is a uniquely beautiful part of Italy.
The coastline stretches over about 20km with small coastal towns and numerous Blue Flag beaches (the European award given to outstanding beaches).
There are many lovely beachside towns along this beautiful coastal strip.
We decided to chose one and drove to Numana where we spent 3 - 4 hours. The highlight of the day was swimming at Spiaggia dei Frate (see separate review).
This was a stunning beach where the white limestone cliffs of Monte Conero dropped right down to meet the Caribbean-coloured waters.
Above the beach, is the Piazza Nuova, a panoramic lookout point with views of Monte Conero. From here you can see a long stretch of the Riviera del Conero coastline.
In hindsight, we could have very easily combined both Numana and Sirolo which are very close together. If I was doing it again, we’d plan to spend time in both towns in the one trip.Written August 31, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Approximately 15-20 minutes walk.
It is an empty and wild beach.

We loved the peace and tranquility compared to civitanova where we were staying. However it is probably very busy during peak periods and parking would be hard.
